Govt increased fares to protect RTC: PCC Chief

Pradesh Congress Committee president Botsa Satyanarayana speaking to media at Gandhi Bhavan on Saturday stated that the state government has no intention to burden the people by increasing the fares of State Road Transport Corporation.

Government has increased fares only to protect the interests of RTC and due to hike in crude prices in international market.

He said the government is losing Rs 700 crores due to increase in petrol prices by the Centre .

The government would get Rs 500 crore through fare hike and would bear the remaining burden of Rs 200 crore.

He appealed to people to understand the situation and cooperate with the state government.

Responding on the Telangana issue, the PCC chief stated that the issue can be solved only through dialogue.

Botsa Satyanarayana said that he was contacting all leaders from both regions and eliciting their opinion.

Reacting on former minister J C Diwakar and Minor Irrigation Minister T G Venkatesh statement that the problem can be solved by sharing of Chief Minister post for Seemandra region for three years and two years for Telangana, the PCC chief took serious objection and advised the leaders not to link this sensitive issue with others.

He advised the leaders not to politicise former chief minister YSR’s death and claim his policies as themselves. The YSR policies belonged to the Congress party only, he stated.

He condemned the attack on Vijayawada MP Lagadapathi Rajagopal allegedly led by YSR Congress party activists in the district.(INN)

APSRTC hikes bus fares, students’ bus passes untouched

2011/7/14 9:45:44 Bus commuters will have to dig deeper into their pockets to reach their destinations from July 16 onwards after the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) announced an increase in fares.

Mr Prasad Rao, justifying the recent hike in diesel prices for the fare hike, said that there will be no changes in the minimum fare of Pallevelugu, Express, Deluxe, Super Luxury and Garuda but an increase in fares upwards of 20 KM of travel in Pallevelugu buses.

    Rollback RTC fares: CPM

2011/7/15 5:45:27 Communist Party (Marxist) Legislator from Miryalaguda, Julakanti Rangareddy demanded that the Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy roll back recent increase in RTC bus fares immediately as they were not in the interest of common man.

Addressing a press conference, he said that it was a setback to the RTC as the commuters would go for an alternative transport mechanism and there would be a fall in the RTC revenue. The fare increase would certainly facilitate the private operators to make a fast buck and the RTC would incur the losses, he stated.

Last year also the RTC increased the fares by 20 percent. This year again the hike in fares would bound to create problems for the common commuters and urged the government to roll back the fares, he pointed out.(INN)

Sub Panel discusses hike in RTC fares

2011/6/27 9:22:01 The state government has, on all accounts, put off taking a decision on whether to increase bus fares of APSRTC.

A Cabinet Sub-Committee meeting is underway on whether to increase the bus fares, at the time of filing this report.

A decision is expected to be announced shortly as the government is undecided about it.

Before making their way to the Cabinet Sub-Committee meeting, Ministers Bosta Satyanarayana, Duddilla Sridhar Babu and Komatireddy Venkata Reddy met Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy who assured them to consider the already burdened commoner during the meeting.

The state government is already bearing a subsidy burden of Rs 191 crore, (Rs 25 on an LPG cylinder).

The Chief Minister is said to have told the Ministers that an alternative mechanism would be evolved not to further burden the common man, according to Sridhar Babu who spoke to media persons informally.

In view of rise in petroleum products including diesel oil, the burden of which the RTC has increased. Besides, the RTC is also running in losses and the fare increase is imminent.

In the light of these developments, the RTC fares would also be increased and Mr Sridhar Babu said that all factors would be taken into account before the said hike is affected considering the plight of the commuters as another dose of increase in petroleum products recently had already burdened the commoner.

“Before affecting the increase of cited fares a consensus would be evolved,” maintained the minister.

The Ministers are, at the time of filing this report, engaged in a meeting of the Ministers’ Sub-Committee which would evolve an opinion for an agreeable fare hike.(INN)

Tamil Nadu hikes bus fares, milk prices

2011/11/17 14:25:05 Chennai, Nov 17 (IANS) In a double blow to the residents of Tamil Nadu already reeling under double-digit inflation, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa Thursday announced a steep hike in bus fares and milk prices and also hinted at an upward revision in power tariff.

In a televised announcement, Jayalalithaa blamed the central government for her government's latest decision taken at a cabinet meeting.

"The state transport undertakings are on the verge of going dysfunctional due to increase in the prices of fuel and spare parts. To make them functional, there is no way except to increase the fares," she said.

As per the revised bus fares, a passenger might have to spend at least a rupee more for every bus ride in cities and towns for the minimum distance.

The minimum bus fares have been increased by a rupee to Rs.3 and the maximum by Rs.5 to Rs.12 across the state other than Chennai. In the state capital, the maximum bus fare has gone up by Rs.2 to Rs.14.

The price of milk has gone up by Rs.6.25 per litre to Rs.24. The milk procurement prices have also been increased by Rs.2 per litre.

Jayalalithaa said the increase in power tariff will be decided by the state electricity board and will have to be ratified by the tariff regulatory agency.

According to her, the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) has a debt burden of Rs.43,000 crore which is likely to go up to Rs.53,000 by the end of this fiscal.

She said the government had no other alternative but to increase the prices as the previous DMK government had brought the state to bankruptcy.

The chief minister said she hoped the centre would provide financial assistance and increase allocation of power to the tune of 1000 MW, but nothing had happened so far.

She said the centre was giving Tamil Nadu a step-motherly treatment while it was offering Rs.21,614 crore package to West Bengal, ruled by an alliance partner.

PCC to plea govt to share LPG burden, RTC fare hike likely: Botsa

2011/6/28 4:10:35 Pradesh Congress Committee president Botsa Satyanarayana on Tuesday revealed that the PCC, on behalf of the ruling Congress, would appeal to the state government to share the burden of increase in prices of Liquefied Petroleum Gas.

Talking to media persons at Gandhi Bhavan, Mr Satyanarayana said that the steep hike in LPG prices will affect the poor and middle classes. “In this context, the PCC will appeal to the government to share the burden,” he said.

Pointing out that the state government is already spending Rs 190 crore to subsidise LPG, or Rs 25 per cylinder, Mr Satyanarayana said that the PCC will appeal to Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy to increase this amount so that the burden on the poor and middle classes is eased.

However, Mr Satyanarayana stated that the commuters in AP State Road Transport Corporation buses would, in all likelihood, would have to shell out more.

He pointed out that the increase in fuel prices meant that sooner or later, the RTC would have to increase the fare too.

“The RTC lost Rs 300 crore last year after the fuel prices were hiked. The Corporation would also lose another Rs 300 crore if the prices of bus tickets are not increased,” he pointed out.

The Transport Minister said the RTC is mulling over a proposal to increase fares, a small hike in Palle Velugu buses and a marginally more increase in fares of Express and Luxury buses, besides other services.

Mr Satyanarayana disclosed that the RTC officials have been asked to explore other alternatives to possibly avoid burdening the commuters.(INN)

Kiran’s attempt to pin blame of losses on YSR abhorrent: YSRC

2011/7/28 9:06:44 The YSR Congress Party on Thursday strongly condemned Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy for trying to pin the blame of the losses incurred by the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation on former chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy.

Talking to media persons at the party office, YSR Congress Party official spokesman Vasireddy Padma said that Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy’s attempts to pin the blame for the sorry state of affairs in the APSRTC on Dr YSR were condemnable.

She added that the former chief minister had implemented all welfare schemes for poor and downtrodden people without increasing fares and fresh taxes. “How can the Chief Minister say that the losses suffered by State Road Transport Corporation were due to the fares not being increased by Dr YSR? The former chief minister was well known for managing financial resources well without knocking backbone of poor and middle class people,” Ms Padma stated.

She pointed out that 40 lakh houses were constructed for the poor during the tenure of YSR and 80 lakh pensions were given to needy.

The party spokesperson also criticised the Chief Minister for finding fault in the YSR schemes and for stating that these were costing state Exchequer dearly.

“If the Chief Minister is really committed to implement the former chief minister’s schemes, he should not have made such serious remarks against him and projected the schemes in a shabby manner,” Ms Padma pointed out.

She asked the Chief Minister to make his stand clear on implementing YSR schemes and programmes.(INN)

Cut VAT, do not raise bus fares: LSP to CM

2011/6/29 4:06:01 The Lok Satta Party on Wednesday requested Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy to ensure that the State-owned Road Transport Corporation (RTC) does not raise fares in the wake of the Union Government’ hike in diesel price.

A Lok Satta Party delegation comprising Katari Srinivasa Rao, V Laxman Balaji, P Bhaskara Rao and P Rohit Kumar called on Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy at the Camp Office and submitted a memorandum.

Pointing out that more than a crore of people use RTC services daily, the Lok Satta leaders told the Chief Minister that any hike in fares would impose a heavy burden on poor and middle class commuters.

The Government can go to the rescue of the loss-making RTC in a number of ways, they represented to the Chief Minister. The Government, for instance, can reduce the 22 percent VAT it imposes on diesel, like some of its counterparts in the country.

It can pass on the increase in revenue from VAT on diesel to the RTC. It can reduce the motor vehicle tax on RTC buses and clear the long-pending dues to the RTC. It can implement the recommendations made by IIM, Ahmedabad, and improve RTC’s revenue.

The Government should promote public transport and not private transport in the interests of environment and fuel security, the LSP said in its memorandum.

The Lok Satta leaders wanted the Government to promote production of biofuels to ensure energy security at a time fossil fuel reserves the world over are dwindling.

Brazil, for instance, has emerged as a leader in production of ethanol from sugarcane. Ethanol blended with petroleum serves as a motor fuel. Ethanol production benefits farmers by ensuring a higher price for sugarcane and the country by saving foreign exchange on import of petroleum products.

Talking to media, Mr Katari Srinivasa Rao expressed the hope that the Chief Minister would heed the practical suggestions made by the delegation.(INN)

BJP slams Trivedi for hike in railway fares

2012/3/14 20:58:35 BJP senior leader and former Minister of State for Railways Bandaru Dattatreya on Wednesday slammed Union Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi for increasing railway fares while tabling the Railway Budget 2012-13 in the Parliament.

Talking to media persons at party office, Nampally, he said the Railway Minister’s decision would put additional burden on the common man. Describing the budget as anti-people and anti-development, he said that the cost of essential commodities, fertilizers and cement prices would go up with the increasing in fares.

Dattatreyya appealed to Dinesh Trivedi to immediately withdraw his decision and take steps for protecting the interests of common man in the budget.

Hailing the minister for giving green signal for second phase of MMTS in Hyderabad, he expressed regrets for allotting a meager fund of Rs 60 crore for the project while nearly Rs 1,000 crore would be needed for the project.

Even in the gauge conversion, laying of new lines and electrification, he said though the State was ready to bear 50 per cent of the project cost, the Centre did not came forward to allot sufficient funds. He alleged that the minister was showing partiality and discrimination in allotment of new trains and new lines.

Terming the Budget as games of numbers, he said that the budget was not useful for common man. (INN)

"This is being done keeping in mind the upcoming festival season in which tourist and holiday traffic increases," an Air India official in the operations arm of the airline told IANS.

According to the official, flight numbers 9603 and 9604 would be operated between the national capital and Port Blair on a CRJ-700 aircraft which has a capacity to ferry 70 passengers.

    VAT increase is must: Govt.

2011/9/15 4:44:00 The State Government on Thursday clarified that the floor rate of Value Added Tax has not yet been increased from 4 per cent to 5 per cent. However, the Chief Minister Office issued a release explaining the consequences of delay in increase the lower slab of VAT by one per cent.

According to CMO release, the Central Government has been compensating the States for the loss of revenue on account of reduction in the rate of CST from 4 per cent to 2 per cent. However, in order to reduce its burden, the Centre has been advising the States to raise the floor rate of VAT by one per cent. Eleven States including Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Karnataka have already raised the rates from 4 per cent to 5 per cent.

Andhra Pradesh has not yet increased the floor rate. The rate of 4 per cent was first imposed when VAT was introduced on April 1, 2005. No change has been made in this rate for the last six years.

The Central has been giving compensation to States for reducing CST from 4 per cent to 2 per cent. Recently, the Centre has informed Andhra Pradesh Government that the compensation payable would be reduced by the amount of revenue that could be gained by raising VAT from 4 per cent to 5 per cent, even if we have not raised this rate. During the year 2010-11 alone the deduction made by the Central Government on this account has been Rs 1089 Crore. In addition, the State Government has been losing an equal amount due to non-increasing of the floor rate of VAT. So, effectively Andhra Pradesh has been losing over Rs 2000 Crore every year by not raising the floor rate of VAT.

The CMO reminded that the Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy in a recent statement wherein he said that Andhra Pradesh is double loser by delaying in increasing the lower slab of VAT by one person. However, analysts say that Thursday's clarification by the CMO is an indication that the government was just preparing the ground to increase the VAT in the next few days. (INN)

Botsa dubs TDP and YSRC as 'Family Parties'

2012/4/11 7:16:13 Pradesh Congress Committee president Botsa Satyanarayana on Wednesday described the Telugu Desam Party and YSR Congress as "family parties".

Addressing a by-election campaign in Kadapa district after paying rich tributes to social reformer Mahatma Jyotiba Phule to mark his 186th Jayanthi, the PCC chief alleged that the family parties would not work to protect the national interests and try to serve their families’ selfish interests.

Unlike Telugu Desam and YSR Congress parties which are run by family members, Botsa claimed that the Congress was a national party and run by freedom fighters and leaders to protect the national interests. He came down heavily on YSR Congress president Jagan Mohan Reddy for his rationale behind continuing Odarpu Yatra despite the death of former chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy two years ago. He accused Jagan of continuing his Odapu Yatra with an eye on the Chief Minister’s post.

Describing the former chief minister YSR as an asset of Congress, Botsa Satyanarayana said that he would not criticize YSR in the by-elections campaign as it would prove costly for the Congress party. (INN)

Huge contrast between YSR's and Congress rule: Vijayamma

2012/2/29 7:02:56 Drawing a contrast between the YSR-term and the three-year Congress rule, YSR Congress on Wednesday said the budget was very deceptive as it has little or no concern for welfare measures and was boasting of 20 per cent growth rate though it was imposing heavy dose of taxation.

“When the growth rate is 20 per cent for the past three years, why were the taxes and fares increased and no sufficient allocations made to the welfare schemes,” Pulivendula MLA YS Vijayamma asked in her address during the discussions on budget in the State Legislative Assembly.

The allocation for Jalayaganam and other welfare schemes were meagre, she said while pointing out that there was an increase in VAT, power tariff, buses fares, water charges and municipal taxes. During the period of 2004-09, no new taxes were imposed, VAT was in fact decreased, no hike in power charges or any other charges, there was only hike in welfare schemes, she said.

“Once the Prime Minster Dr Manmohan Singh, who is a renowned economist, enquired with my husband as to how could he run the government without imposing any new tax and carrying out the welfare schemes with such efficiency. This information was shared with me by YSR,” she said.

The two promises made in the manifesto during 2009 elections were conveniently forgotten and the Rajiv Aarogyasri, 104, 108 schemes are losing its sheen and the heavy dose of indirect taxation is breaking the back of common man, she said.

Fee reimbursement is not carried out in the true spirit, farmers are in distress and have declared a crop holiday, industries are reeling under power cuts, municipal and water taxes went up. Weavers, senior citizens and all sections of people were not happy, she said.

The State and Centre are not showing concern over the poor as the prices of gas and petro products went up affecting the common man, she said.

The 2004-09 period has seen has given free power to farmers to a tune of Rs 1,600 crores and has reduced power tariff by 0.75 paise to industries. There was no increase in municipal taxes while 26 lakh farmers benefitted out of free power, and 25 lakh students were given fee reimbursement, she added.

Under Aarogaysri 11 lakh people were benefitted but it is now not going on the right track. There are Rs 4,000 crores dues as fees reimbursement and even Rs 10,000 crores were not spent under Jalayagnam. No compensation was paid to farmer during 2009-10 nor was the loan waiver scheme to weavers was carried out, she said. (INN)
