TPJAC bandh successful, stone pelting at buses

2011/7/22 3:36:30 Barring incidents of stone pelting at buses, the bandh call given by the Telangana Political Joint Action Committee received good response, with normal life coming to a standstill in all Telangana districts except in the state capital.

The Telangana Political Joint Action Committee had given the bandh call on Thursday, to protest against the state government's "fascist attitude" in refusing to allow Telangana leaders pay homage to M Yadireddy, who committed suicide in New Delhi on Wednesday. The TPJAC had also alleged that the government was attempting to curb the right of the employees to go on strike.

An official statement by the TPJAC claimed the bandh was total and successful and thanked the people for their cooperation.

Reports coming in say that schools, colleges, shops and other commercial establishments remained closed in Hyderabad and other Telangana districts.

Pro-Telangana activists prevented Andhra Pradesh Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) buses from plying at various places in the districts, even as the services were normal in the state capital.

The RTC had decided to operate normal services in all areas in the city after getting reports from the police at 9.30 AM.

However, the pro-Telangana activists pelted stones at about 20 buses, including private buses in LB Nagar, Bowenpally, Jeedimetla, Suraram Colony, B N Reddy Colony, Vanasthalipuram, NGO Colony and Hayathnagar.

Despite the administration making elaborate security arrangements across the state to thwart any untoward incident, the driver of an RTC bus and its conductor sustained injuries in one stone pelting incident. They were shifted to the hospital.

The bandh supporters held demonstrations expressing condolences to Yadireddy and they also protested against the delay in formation of separate Telangana.

Protest demonstrations were held at several places across the region.

In related incidents, the police foiled the attempt by the activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party to gatecrash the state Secretariat, by taking into custody several of its cadre.

The Osmania University postponed its MBA, M Ed, D Pharma and BE Supplementary examinations besides PG Engineering entrance test. The new dates are likely to be announced shortly.

The PG engineering entrance will be held on July 25. The other universities in the region postponed their exams.(INN)
