Welcoming the decision of the UPA Government to give 4.5 per cent quota to Muslim community in jobs and educational institutions, the Telugu Desam Party on Saturday demanded that the Muslims be given separate and should not be included in the OBC quota.
Addressing the media at the NTR Trust Bhavan, party politburo members Yanamala Ramakrishnudu and Dadi Veerabhadra Rao said that the government should hike the OBC quota to 52 percent besides giving separate quota to the Muslim community. They ridiculed the UPA decision to give quota to Muslims from the OBC category as a sign of ‘bankruptcy’ of the Congress-led government.
They alleged that the government has ignored the reports of Sachar Committee and Ranganath Mishra Committee which recommended 10 percent separate quota for the Muslims. They said it was unfortunate that the OBC quota had been slashed from 27 percent to 22.5 percent as result of the Muslim induction at a time when the BC associations and political parties have been demanding a hike from 27 percent to 52 percent on the basis of population in 2011.
The TDP leaders said that the Congress party, both at state level and national level, has always denied justice to the BC’s socially, economically and also politically.
They said that TDP founder N T Rama Rao, as a convener of the National Front and the then Prime Minister V P Singh, provided a special budget for the development of BCs, but the same was cancelled when the Congress party returned to power. They said that the Centre and State had remained silent and blind to the demand of the BC’s for a sub plan budget allocation on the same lines of SC/ST sub plan allocations.
The TDP leaders alleged that the UPA Government was showing step-motherly attitude towards backward class communities and demanded that the Centre should also hike BC quota from 27 to 52 apart from providing a separate quota to Muslims.
The TDP leaders said a separate constitutional amendment may be taken up, if necessary, to provide Muslims a separate quota and to increase the BC quota. (INN)
2012/1/27 14:36:46 Telugu Desam president N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday demanded that the government provide 33 percent reservation for Backward classes in the law making bodies.
Talking media persons after emerging out of meeting convened for empowerment of BCs at NTR Trust Bhavan, Naidu demanded that the government appoint a commission to look into problems being faced by the BCs at the national level. He announced that the TDP would start agitation at the national level to provide 33 percent reservations for BCs in the legislative bodies.
Naidu also demanded that the government should not reduce the 27 percent quota for BCs by providing 4.5 per cent reservation for the minorities. Instead, he said that the minorities should be given separate quota and funds for their empowerment and welfare.
The TDP chief also demanded that the government allot adequate funds in the budget for empowerment of BCs. He took serious note on the inclusion communities in the BCs list without allocating sufficient funds for their welfare and increasing reservation quota. (INN)
2012/4/15 9:36:42 The Aalmi Jamiyatul Mashaiq, a representative body of religious heads, on Sunday demanded that the Hyderabad City Police impose a ban on the speeches of VHP leader Praveen Togadia.
In a statement, AJM chief advisor Moulana Syed Shah Mazhar Hussaini alleged that despite the prevailing volatile situation due to recent communal clashes in the Old City, Praveen Togadia was being allowed to make provocative speeches in different parts of the city. Referring to one such speech, he said that Togadia objected to the reservation being given to Muslims and tried to instigate SCs and STs by falsely claiming Muslims were being reservation benefits from their quota.
Mazhar Hussaini said that the Muslim community was being reservation not on the religious lines, but due to their poor economic conditions. However, he said the SCs and STs too were given reservation benefits purely on religious grounds. He said that a person belonging to other religions could not get reservation or other benefits that a SC or ST enjoys.
He also defended the Haj subsidy and other benefits that the minorities enjoy and said that Togadia was mistaken that those sops were being given to the Muslims from the taxes collected from the majority community. He said Muslims too were paying the taxes regularly and thousands of Muslim NRIs were contributing to the foreign exchange that the country earns.
Demanding that the City Police impose a ban on the Praveen Togadia's speeches, Mazhar Hussaini said that provocative speeches with distorted facts would only affect the communal harmony in the city. (INN)
Premature to provide 10 pc quota to Backward Muslims: MoS
2011/8/8 9:24:41 Minister of State for Minority Affairs Vincent H Pala on Monday said that it would be premature for the Centre to provide 10 per cent reservations for Backward Muslims based on the recommendations of the Ranganath Mishra Commission report.
In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Mr Pala said that since recommendations contained in the report of the National Commission for Religious and Linguistic Minorities are under consideration of the Central Government, the question of states providing reservation of 10 per cent for Backward Muslims based on the recommendations of the NCRLM Report is premature at this stage.
The Report (NCRLM), commonly known as Ranganath Misra Commission, was laid in both the Houses of Parliament on December 18, 2009.
Mr Pala also informed the House that Action Taken Report (ATR) on NCRLM has not been laid in the Parliament.
“Placing of ATRs in the Parliament is mandatory in the case where the Commissions are set up under Commissions of Enquiry Act 1952. However, the NCRLM was set up under Government Resolution No1-11/2004-MC (D), dated October 29, 2004,” the MoS in his written reply.
He added that the recommendations or findings of the Commission have been circulated to concerned Ministries or Departments for their comments.
Mr Pala further informed the House that under the Prime Minister’s New 15 Point Programme for the Welfare of Minorities, priority sector lending is provided for various activities to the Minorities including Muslims. He added that in 2010-11, Rs 1,43,396.70 crore have been provided under this programme.(INN)
Krishnaiah demands 25 pc quota in corporate colleges
2011/6/1 9:24:55
AP State Backward Classes Welfare Association president R Krishnaiah on Wednesday came down heavily on the N Kiran Kumar Reddy government over the plight of the weaker sections students.
Stating that they were not in a position to pursue higher studies due to the exorbitant fees being charged by the corporate colleges, particularly the Sri Chaitanya and Narayana Colleges, Mr Krishanaiah said that these institutions were fleecing even the students coming from the middle classes.
In this regard, he blamed the government for not paying attention to curb the activities of these corporate colleges.
Mr Krishnaiah lamented that, “though the Right to Education Act was introduced which gave 25 per cent quota to the students, the government has failed to pass a GO.”
With this, the colleges were taking undue advantage and were fleecing the innocent students, Mr Krishnaiah stated.
He demanded that the students from poor classes be provided the facility of 25 per cent quota as per the RTE Act.
In a memorandum submitted to Higher Education Minister Parthasarathi at the Secretariat, Mr Krishnaiah urged the government to regulate the fee structure as the colleges were collecting Rs 30,000 from day scholars and for hostel inmates Rs 60000.
He told media persons later that the Minister had agreed to look into the matter and do the needful.
The state government on Monday decided to opt for the safest way out after being caught in a flux over the question of providing reservations for the Backward Classes in the coming Local Body elections by retaining the existing 34 per cent quota for BC candidates.
The decision to retain the existing 34 per cent quota was taken after a Group of Ministers, comprising of Panchayat Raj Minister K Jana Reddy, Social Welfare Minister Pithani Satyanarayana, and Backward Classes Welfare Minister Basavaraju Saraiah met at the Secretariat to discuss the contentious issue.
The Minister discussed the ‘issue’ threadbare and decided in favour of conducting the cited PR elections, retaining the 34 per cent reservations to the Backward Classes candidates.
Mr Jana Reddy, who briefed the media persons in his chambers later, said that the said quota for BCs would be retained no matter whether 34 per cent quota inclusion would exceed the Apex Court’s ceiling.
Asked whether the Apex Court ruling which specified 50 per cent quota in the local body elections would be jumped, the Minister clarified “We will look into it later.”
Replying to another question, Mr Jana Reddy stated that that the elections will go ahead as schedule.

2011/9/6 3:39:35 Jai Uttarandhra Ikya Vedika convener J T Rama Rao announced that the vedika would stage `Chalo New Delhi’ agitation on Sept 25 demanding a separate Railway Zone headquartered at Visakhapatnam.
Releasing a poster in this connection at a programme here on Tuesday, Rama Rao said that despite several agitations and representations, the Central Government, especially the Ministry of Railways, has failed to respond to the demand for separate Visakhapatnam Railway Zone. However, he said the agitation would be intensified further if the authorities fail to respond.
Rama Rao alleged that the government and political leaders were undermining the movement, although the activists of different organizations have been conducting dharnas, Rail rook and other public campaigns in the region. He said the ‘Chalo New Delhi’ was aimed at drawing the attention of national level leaders towards the need for a separate railway zone under Visakhapatnam.
Describing Visakhapatnam as one of the fastest-growing cities in Asia with tremendous economic, IT and industrial activities, Rama Rao said a separate railway zone would increase more connectivity and ensure growth for the entire region. (INN)
2011/9/26 7:36:54 Congress MPs from the Telangana region have accused the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen of trying to sabotage the Telangana agitation by giving it a communal colour.
Referring to MIM president Asaduddin Owaisi's statement saying that his party would not support Telangana agitation, the Congress MPs alleged that by giving such a statement, Owaisi tried to give an impression that Muslims were against the Telangana state. However, Owaisi's statement was in total contrast to the reality, he said. "Thousands of Muslims in the region have been actively participating in the Telangana movement in both, the districts and the State capital. However, by making anti-Telangana remarks Owaisi has hurt their sentiments," Karimnagar MP Ponnam Prabhakar said while addressing a press conference here on Monday.
Ponnam claimed that the MIM was not the sole representative of Muslim community in the Telangana region. Several prominent organisations and individuals are in support of Telangana state and Owaisi's statement would be of no value either to them or the on-going Telangana agitation.
Warangal MP P Rajaiah accused the Governor ESL Narasimhan of sending wrong reports to the Centre on Telangana agitation. He said that both the State and Centre were trying to sabotage the movement by inciting violence. However, he said the Telangana activists would ensure that their agitation remains peaceful.
Nizamabad MP Madhu Yaskhi Goud said that despite being a part of the ruling party, the Congress leaders were agitating against the government on the streets. Therefore, their commitment towards Telangana was stronger than the TRS and BJP who were trying to increase their strength in the legislative assembly by enforcing by-elections. He said that it was the responsibility of all elected representatives in the region to ensure that the lives and properties of the people in the region, especially the employees who are protesting for the separate State are protected.
Yashki warned that the Kiran Kumar Reddy Government would collapse if it tries to sabotage the Telangana agitation. (INN)
2011/7/31 3:54:09 For most non-Muslims, the mention of ‘Ramzan’ conjures up an image of the delicious Haleem and the ‘Sheer Korma’, but for the Muslims, these are the furthest things in their minds.
The Muslims’ only focus is to abstain from all foods and liquids throughout the day and offer as many additional prayers as possible.
Interestingly, the ubiquitous Haleem stalls are thronged by Muslims who are away from their homes for jobs or any other purposes, besides a large number of non-Muslims who take the opportunity to relish the dish which is quite nutritious.
According to Idara Tahkheekhat-e-Ilmia Director Maulana Syed Khwaja Moizuddin Ashrafi, Muslims are expressly directed to abstain from worldly pleasures and concentrate solely on the spiritual aspect during the Holy Month. “It is wrongly assumed by a majority of non-Muslims that the Holy Month is used to relish delicacies like Haleem,” Maulana Ashrafi says.
He points out, “Any Muslim will tell you that he will keep the fast to get closer to God and get spiritual upliftment. Some of the Muslims who are not quite able to get spiritual upliftment are habituated to the good things of the world concentrate on the delicacies. But this does not mean that Haleem or other delicacies are an integral part of Ramzan. Ramzan is observed by every Muslim around the world, while Haleem is only available in Hyderabad.”
Maulana Ashrafi adds that with the Holy Month around the corner, Muslims all over the world are busy making last minute arrangements so that they can concentrate on getting as much spiritual benefit as possible in the next one month.
This one month will see the people observing fasts from dawn to dusk, over 14 hours, besides offering the Taraveeh prayers in addition to the compulsory prayers offered five times a day throughout the year.
Some of the more pious ones even offer the Tahajjud prayers in the dead of the night before the time for Sehri, the predawn meal, begins.
Besides this, affluent Muslims are required to give 2.5 per cent of their wealth in charity to the poor in the form of Zakaat. This is considered the most remarkable aspects of Islam, where the well-to-do are required to take care of the people who are indeed needy.
Maulana Ashrafi points out that the first preference for Zakaat should be given to one’s poor relatives, then those poor who are known to him and then the orphans who are indeed in need of help.
“Care should be taken as to the person who is given the Zakaat is indeed deserving. Nowadays, many Madrasas are targeting affluent Muslims and trying to gain advantage of the Zakaat laws,” the Maulana says.
The devout Muslims, both adults and children, irrespective of gender, observe fast for the full day shunning away all sorts of food and drinks. Though the fast is not mandatory for children they also join their elders in the family and observe fast.
The fast starts at Saher, the time before dawn and ends with the dusk, soon after the sunset.
This year the Saher time ends at 4:27 AM and the Iftar time (breaking of the fast) begins at 6:55 PM on the first day of Ramzan.
The Holy Month begins with sighting the crescent moon and ends at sighting the next crescent moon. The date in Islamic calendar begins from the dusk unlike the days in Gregorian calendar beginning at midnight.(INN)

2012/4/21 6:43:57 Hyderabad, April 21 (INN): Secondary Education Minister K Parathasarathy on Saturday announced that the State Government will implement the 25 per cent quota for poor students in all private unaided schools as mandated by the Right to Education Act (RTE) and as directed by the Supreme Court.

He also praised Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen president Asaduddin Owaisi for supporting the Telangana state. 2011/7/9 3:56:34 The second day of the YSR Congress Party’s maiden plenary began on a chaotic note as delegates from Telangana and Seemandhra regions tried to outshout each other, to pressurise party president YS Jaganmohan Reddy to make his stand clear on the separate statehood demand.
Holding placards in support of their respective demands, the party delegates from both Telangana and Seemandhra regions shouted slogans, demanding that Mr Jaganmohan Reddy support their stand.
The party leaders faced a torrid time in trying to bring the situation under control as the slogan shouting built up in intensity.
Party leader Konda Surekha, MLA from Parkal in Warangal, hinted that the Telangana Rashtra Samithi was behind the delay in formation of the separate state, even while it was misleading the people of the region on the issue.
“One particular party had targeted Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy during his lifetime on the separate statehood issue. Now that he is no more, what is preventing the creation of Telangana?” Ms Surekha questioned.
She also said that she was keenly awaiting a statement by Mr Jaganmohan Reddy on the issue, like all other separate Telangana protagonists.(INN)
2011/10/5 0:34:14 Senior Congress leader and Finance Minister Pranab Mukharji who is expected to come with some good news on Telangana issue during his forthcoming visit to Hyderabad, has disappointed the Telangana leaders with his latest statement.
He stated "Telangana is a very sensitive issue and its 5-decade-long pending-issue, which can't be resolved overnight. If, we take any hasty step on this issue, undoubtedly it leads to new demands for separate states from all over the country. So, we have to carefully evaluate the situation and get consensus between all the regions and then only can make a move. I have observed that all the political parties in Telangana have no difference of opinion on this burning issue, but there are wide differences between regions in the state. So, we need more time to resolve this issue."
