Act on CAG report and punish the Guilty: Dr. JP

2012/3/30 7:24:52 The Lok Satta Party on Friday charged the State Government with presenting the Comptroller and Auditor General’s report on gross irregularities in land allocations deliberately on the last day of the Assembly's budget session with a view to avoiding a discussion.

In a statement, Lok Satta Party President Dr Jayaprakash Narayan disclosed that the CAG had submitted the report on Government land allocations between 2006 and 2011 several months ago.

Dr JP faulted the Government for its indifference to allegations of corruption and irregularities in land allocations and treating it as a matter to be looked into by the Supreme Court or the CBI. The State Government is duty bound to order an inquiry, identify officials and people's representatives guilty of either indulging in corruption and irregularities or abetting them, and initiate action against them. Instead, the Government is turning a blind eye to unbridled loot of public resources and indirectly licensing corruption.

Dr. JP recalled that the Lok Satta Party and other Opposition parties had exposed in the Assembly how the Government sacrificed public interest in land allocations. The CAG report has merely confirmed their charges by adducing additional evidence.

Dr JP demanded that the CAG report be brought under the purview of the proposed House committee to review land allotments.

The Government should announce a land and natural resource allotment policy anchored in transparency, competition and public interest. It should not give scope for loot of natural resources in future, Dr. JP added. (INN)

Reddy brothers will prove their innocence: BJP

2011/9/5 0:01:57 Blaming the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) for the arrest of former Karnataka tourism minister G. Janardhana Reddy, a defiant Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Monday said the mining baron will soon come out clean.

"We have full faith in the objectivity and fairness of our judicial system and we are sure that the Reddy brothers will be able to prove their innocence," said BJP leader Balbir Punj, referring to the three Reddy brothers -- G. Janardhana, G. Karunakara and G. Somashekara.

OMC managing director and Janardhana Reddy's brother-in-law B. Srinivasa Reddy was also arrested.

"The arrest is an extension of the internal problems which the Congress has got in Andhra Pradesh. Reddy's arrest appears to be part of the politics being practised by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA)," he said.

"We had seen various reports like the CAG (Comptroller Auditor General) report and the Shunglu committee report in Delhi on corruption but nobody has heard of CBI going and knocking at the doors of (Delhi Chief Minister) Sheila Dikshit," he added.

Dhananjay Kumar, another BJP leader, said: "If the CBI comes to the conclusion that it has to apprehend somebody as part of its investigations, then it is well within its rights to do so. The agency is carrying out the orders of the Andhra Pradesh High Court."

This has been the demand of the Congress in Karnataka right from day one. CBI should find out who all have looted the national wealth."

TDP denies Naidu's links with Gali

2011/11/4 5:47:23 The Telugu Desam Party on Friday slammed Kadapa MP Jagan Mohan Reddy for dragging the name of its president N Chandrababu Naidu into the Obulapuram Mining Corporation (OMC) illegal mining scam.

Talking to reporters at NTR Trust Bhavan, senior TDP leader K Yerran Naidu said that although it was true that the mining lease was transferred to the OMC during the TDP regime, all irregularities happened during the tenure of YS Rajasekhara Reddy as the Chief Minister. He said that Jagan must realise that the CBI was investigating into the illegal mining by the OMC and not the transfer of mining lease.

Yerran Naidu accused the YSR Congress president of unnecessarily dragging the name of Chandrababu Naidu only to get political mileage and divert attention. He said Chandrababu Naidu had no connections with Gali Janardhan Reddy or the OMC at any point of time.

Meanwhile, the Congress party supported Jagan's claim that the mining lease was transferred during TDP's rule. However, it also suspected the involvement of Jagan in the OMC scam.

Demanding an enquiry into the GO pertaining to the transfer of lease to the OMC, Congress MLA Anam Vivekananda Reddy claimed that Jagan had connections with OMC chairman Gali Janardhan Reddy. He asked Jagan to disclose the details of what transpired between him and the CBI officials on Friday. (INN)

Naidu blames YSR for Paritala murder

2011/9/28 5:28:16 Telugu Desam party president N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday reiterated his allegation that former chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy was behind the murder of Telugu Desam Party Anantapur MLA Paritala Ravindra.

Talking to media persons as part of three days visit to Anantapur district, Chandrababu Naidu alleged that YS Rajasekhara Reddy hatched conspiracy to kill a few more TDP leaders apart from Paritala Ravindra in Anantapur district.

Naidu also accused YSR of being involved in the Obulapuram Mining Corporation irregularities by granting illegal permits to former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhan Reddy for mining in the district. He alleged that YSR responsible for encouraging corruption of Gali Brothers.

The TDP chief said that Gali Janardhan Reddy was behind the bars for destroying the Tribal Goddess Sunkulamma Temple at the mining site in the district. “The Goddess might have cursed Gali janardhan reddy for destroying her temple as part of mining activities,” he said.

Stating no one could destroy his party, Naidu reminded that Gali Janardhan Reddy once made a similar statement and now he is counting bars in the jail. He appealed to people to chase away corrupt persons from the politics.

No regrets about dropping Yeddyuprappa: Advani

2011/11/2 1:49:07 (IANS) Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani Wednesday said he did not regret that the party had taken action against former Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, who was arrested in connection with a graft case.

"The problem in Karnataka is because the party is dealing with corruption firmly," Advani told reporters in Panaji during his anti-corruption Jan Chetna Yatra, which entered its 22nd day Wednesday.

"I do not regret anything. Whether it is the Congress or the BJP, corruption has to be handled effectively," Advani said when asked about differences in the party over the issue of Yeddyurappa, the BJP's first chief minister in southern India, who had to resign after being accused by the Karnataka Lokayukta of corruption and nepotism.

"The moment the Lokayukta gave the report, we did not take more than a couple of hours to decide," said Advani, referring to the party's decision to drop Yeddyurappa.

Commenting on the issue of illegal mining in Goa, Advani said the party would not treat the issue with "kid gloves".

"It is (illegal mining) a serious matter...because of illegal mining those who are doing legal mining are also affected adversely," the senior BJP leader said, adding that his party colleagues were "very active" in combating the scourge of illegal mining.

Hundreds of officials listed in illegal mining cases

    2011/10/27 20:24:18

(IANS) India's battle against corruption and for accountability from its huge bureaucracy is set to get a boost as the Karnataka government prepares to punish over 600 officials, a record for the country, over illegal mining.

Among those facing suspension and other disciplinary actions are three officers of the highly-prized Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and four from the Indian Forest Service (IFS), official sources told IANS here Thursday.

The Karnataka cabinet is meeting Friday to act on the recommendation of an official panel it set up to study the findings of the Lokayukta (ombudsman) on the complicity of these officials in the massive illegal iron ore mining in the state.

The then Lokayukta, N. Santosh Hegde, submitted his report July 27 and the government has to accept or reject it within three months. Hegde's term ended Aug 2.

The state government informed the Lokayukta Wednesday that its official panel has finalised a plan of action on the illegal mining report and it will be considered by the cabinet Friday.

Hegde had recommended action against 787 officials, but the official panel headed by Additional Chief Secretary K. Jairaj has pruned the list to 617 officials, the sources said.

The officials belong to various state departments such as mining, forest, revenue and transport.

This will perhaps be the first time in India that such a large number of officials will face disciplinary action for a single crime - of abetting/facilitating massive illegal iron ore mining that is estimated to have cost the state treasury billions of rupees in revenue.

The action will come against the backdrop of heightening war of words between the central government and civil society groups over enactment of tougher laws and setting up massively empowered institution to curb growing corruption in the country.

The proposed action against officials will also compliment the Indian judiciary's active scrutiny of actions of politicians in power.

The judiciary's intervention has led to jailing of former Indian minister A. Raja in the telecom scandal and former Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa in cases of corruption and illegal land deals.

The punishment to Karnataka officials will be a booster also for the institution of Lokayukta (ombudsman) as this will be the first time that action against a huge number will be taken based on the ombudsman's findings.

Karnataka is the first state in India to set up the Lokayukta way back in 1986. Many states in India still have not established the anti-corruption ombudsman.

Hegde's report led to the fall of the first Bharatiya Janata Party government headed by Yeddyurappa as his trial was recommended for corruption in the scam. He resigned July 31 and the new government headed by D.V. Sadananda Gowda took office Aug 4.

The illegal mining scandal has rocked Karnataka since 2006 when H.D. Kumaraswamy of the Janata Dal-Secular headed the coalition government with the BJP.

Mining baron and former BJP minister Gali Janardhana Reddy, now in Hyderabad jail for illegal mining in Andhra Pradesh, accused Kumaraswamy of taking Rs.150 crore bribe to allow illegal mining.

Kumaraswamy referred the allegations against him to Hegde, the then ombudsman.

The scope of Hegde's probe was enlarged after Yeddyurappa became chief minister in May 2008.

Hegde estimated in his report that Karnataka has suffered a loss of over Rs.16,000 crore because of illegal mining.

Besides recommending trial of Yeddyurappa and action against over 700 officials, Hegde had said Reddy, his elder brother G. Karunakara and their associate B. Sriramulu be dropped from the Yeddyurappa cabinet.

All three lost ministership when Yeddyurappa himself quit July 31.

Reddy was arrested Sep 5 by the Central Bureau of Investigation in connection with illegal mining in Andhra Pradesh and is now in Hyderabad's Chanchalaguda jail.

Yeddyurappa is also in jail in Bangalore but in connection with other corruption cases against him, mainly relating to land deals.

CBI submits Jagans assets preliminary probe report

    2011/7/26 10:06:26

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday submitted a report of its preliminary probe, into the assets of YSR Congress Party president YS Jaganmohan Reddy to the High Court in a sealed cover.

The report of the CBIs preliminary probe, besides two reports on the alleged illegal allotments of lands to Emaar Properties, were submitted by CBI Joint Director VV Lakshminarayana to the Division Bench, comprising of Chief Justice Nisar Ahmed Kakru and Justice Vilas V Afzalpurkar.

Mr Lakshminarayana told media persons later that the preliminary probe was conducted as per the High Courts orders into the allegations that Mr Jaganmohan Reddy had misused the office of his father and former chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy for his business interests.

The CBI official further said that the CBI looked into the businesses of 24 companies which have invested in Mr Jaganmohan Reddys businesses and focussed on revenue, industries, IT and mining departments in its investigations.

The YSR Congress Party chief had earlier approached the Supreme Court to get a stay on the High Courts orders of the preliminary probe, but the Apex Court had quashed his plea on July 22.

Ordering the probe, the High Court had said, The probe should be conducted by the CBI director or a special officer appointed by the CBI.

Prima facie, an inquiry is necessary to clear the doubts, the Court had said.

The High Court had taken up the case after Cantonment MLA P Shankar Rao, now made a Minister, had written two letters, one on the illegal allotment of lands by the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation and the other one about the Kadapa MPs wealth.(INN)
