CPI to contest by-elections

The Communist Party of India will participate in the by-elections likely to be held in 24 assembly constituencies in the State.

While seven seats are already vacant, 17 more assembly segments would go for by-polls if the rebel Congress MLAs gets disqualified for violating the party whip. CPI state secretary K Narayana on Monday announced that the party would contest from all the constituencies going for by-elections. However, Narayana told reporters that a final decision in this regard would be taken by January 6-7 after discussing the issue in the party's executive committee meeting to be held in Hyderabad.

Narayana demanded that the State Government come out with the comprehensive details of raids conducted by the Anti Corruption Bureau on liquor shops as they have exposed the nexus between the ministers and the liquor mafia. He said that the government should order a high-level probe into the liquor scam and punish the guilty, irrespective of their position.

He also announced that the CPI would stage protests in front of Excise Offices across the state on December 21 demanding that the liquor shops sell sachets as per the government fixed MRP. (INN)

Raghuvulu slams CPI's statement on winning prospects in by-polls

2012/4/26 6:55:56 Hyderabad, April 26 (INN): Communist Party of India (Marxist) state secretary B V Raghavulu on Thursday condemned CPI state secretary K Narayana's comments that CPI(M) has no prospects of winning in the ensuing by-elections.

Talking to media persons, Raghavulu said that, “no one can predict the outcome of by-elections and we have to obey people’s verdict, whatever it may be.” He said that Narayana made these comments as he was of the opinion that only winning candidates have to contest in the elections. He said that his party would contest in the by-elections without bothering about victory or defeat.

Raghavulu alleged that the CPI has been supporting the Telugu Desam Party in the by-elections with a hidden agenda to defeat the CPI(M) candidates. Stating that alliances between parties were not permanent, he said that the tie-ups were limited only to by-elections. He said that CPI(M) would extend full support to Lok Satta party in those constituencies where it was not fielding its aspirants in the by-elections.

CPI not to contest by-polls, to support TDP, TRS

2012/4/20 6:53:10 Hyderabad, April 20 (INN): Communist Party of India state secretary K Narayana on Friday announced that his party would not contest the ensuing by-elections to be held in 18 Assembly seats and one Parliament seat in the State.

Talking to media persons after emerging out of meeting with CPI(M) state secretary B V Raghavulu at his party office at RTC cross roads, he said that the party unanimously took a decision not to contest the next by-elections due to changed political equations in the State. However, he said the CPI would extend its support to Telugu Desam Party in the ensuing by-elections from all constituencies, except Parakala Assembly constituency, where it would support the Telangana Rashtra Samithi.

As the ruling Congress party has totally failed to address the people’s issues in the state, Narayana said that the CPI has decided to support opposition Telugu Desam Party in the by-elections. He said that there was no question of extending support to CPI(M) in the by-elections from any constituency, as reported earlier. However, he claimed that the decision would not affect the unity and relations of Left parties.

Admitting that differences exist between the Left parties, he said that the CPI would have forged an alliance with the CPI (M) in the by-elections if it would have mutually benefitted the left parties. He said that the CPI might also have a tie-up with the TRS in 2014 general elections.

Talking to reporters, CPI (M) State Secretary BV Raghavulu said that the CPI's decision was 'unfortunate' and it would have been better for the CPI (M) to support the CPI candidates in the by-elections. However, he said that the decision would not affect the prospects of CPI (M) candidates and they would contest independently from a few constituencies without having any tie-up with the other parties.

“The party will contest independently from a few Assembly constituencies, where it has strong base,” he said. The CPI is likely to contest from Anantapur, Polavaram, Payakaraopeta, Tirupati and Ongole seats. However, Raghavulu said that a final decision in this regard would be taken at a later stage.
