Veteran actor Giri babu who has 550 films to his credit has been honored with Doctorate services by West Brook University in USA for his contribution to film industry and for his social service activities. He called for a press meet at Film Nagar Cultural Center at Hyderabad on Tuesday to inform about his award.
Giri babu family members, some film stars and producers have joined him in this meeting to share his joy. Speaking to media Giri babu said "I have entered film industry in year 1973 and did more than 550 films until now. Still I am keen to act in the films as long as I can do. I feel very happy and proud for acting with all top actors in the industry. I have constructed a cricket stadium in my town. I have also formed a committee for an all round development of the town. This award is given to me in recognition of my services to film industry and for my social service activities. I am the second person in the industry who received doctorate on this base from the university. Earlier, Krishnam Raju has received the same award on same reasons."

The Padma awards are given to eminent people from all walks of life for their contribution to their chosen field. Superstar Krishn’a name is said to be in the list of awardees this year. He is likley to be honured with a Padmasri.
Mohan Babu got Padmasri sometime back. Chiranjeevi got the Padma Bhushan in 2006. Krishna is also set to receive a doctorate soon. The Andhra University has decided to confer the doctorate on Krishna.
Accolades and honours never end for veteran actress and social activist Shabana Azmi. Right now she is in Britain where Leeds University will honour her with a doctorate.
'I'm getting a doctorate from Leeds University on June 9. It's an exhilarating feeling for sure,' Shabana told before leaving for Britain.
This is not her first doctorate though. 'I got a doctorate from Jadavpur University six years ago and a visiting professorship from Michigan University in 2000 as a part of the Martin Luther King award from Ann Arbor University,' she said.
How does it feel for Shabana, bathed in film awards, to be fiercely feted by the academia?
'If you ask me to choose between being recognised for my work in cinema and the academic honours, I'd be nonplussed. The doctorates are for my work outside cinema. They, therefore, have another kind of value attached to them.
'To me, my most valuable award is the Gandhi International Peace Prize for my work in the Mumbai slums. And the award that I least deserved was the one given to me by the International Human Rights in 1989 by French president Francois Mitterand along with Mother Teresa. Though I didn't deserve it, I loved it.'
New Delhi, Oct 16 (IANS) Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who is currently in Sydney shooting for "The Great Gatsby", is to receive an honorary doctorate from the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane on Thursday.
"The Queensland University of Technology (QUT) honours me with a doctorate on the 20th of October in Brisbane…deep gratitude," Amitabh posted on micro-blogging site Twitter.
The 69-year-old will go to accept the honour post his shooting schedule.
"Yes after I finish the shoot for 'The Great Gatsby', over to Brisbane for the Honorary Doctorate from the Queensland University," he added.
Meanwhile, Amitabh is enjoying every bit of shooting for his Hollywood debut "The Great Gatsby", directed by Baz Luhrmann. He is in awe of the working style on the film, which is an adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic and has Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead.
"Long meticulous rehearsals with Leonardo Di Caprio, Tobey Maguire and Joel Egerton, for a small scene…incredible detailing," he added.

Mumbai, Mar 12: A youth was today detained for allegedly calling up actress Katrina Kaif and threatening and abusing her companion and actor Salman Khan, police said.
The youth, Ajay Vasant Giri, a resident of suburban Mulund, was nabbed following a non-cognisable complaint registered by Khan yesterday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IX), V K Choubey told PTI here.
According to police sources, the 25-year old Giri is in the habit of calling random numbers in the wee hours and ended up calling Kaif at 4:30 am on Saturday.
Khan answered the call and got into an argument with him during which Giri allegedly abused and threatened the actor.
The actor lodged the complaint with Bandra police following which officials zeroed-in on Giri's number and caught him, the sources said.
Giri is a class XII dropout and the son of a businessman, the police officer added.
Preventive action will be taken against Giri, the sources added.

The Leeds Metropolitan University, by giving the doctorate to the 32-year-old star, has fulfilled its wish to honour prominent Indian personalities who contributed to India's emergence as a fast developing cinema-proud nation during its 60th year of freedom struggle, a spokesperson of the University said.

The man has been identified as a 25 year old Vasant Giri. Salman is reported to have bashed up this man.
A police complaint has also been lodged against Giri. Katrina Kaif however, has remained tightlipped about the whole incident.
