Jayashankar cremated, T activists damage NTR’s statue

Thousands of pro-Telangana activists, on Wednesday bid a tearful farewell to Telangana ideologue Prof K Jayashankar, who died due to throat cancer on Tuesday.

However, the last journey of the late separate Telangana spearhead was marred by scenes of vandalism and desecration, after the activists attacked and damaged the statue of former chief minister and Telugu Desam Party founder NT Rama Rao.

The body was taken in a procession from Ekashila Park in Hanmakonda where it was kept to enable the people to pay their last respects, to Padmakshigutta cremation ground in Warangal via Hanumakonda bus stand. At Padmakshigutta cremation ground, Jayashankar’s adopted son Brahmam performed the last rites and consigned his body to flames.

Those who paid their last respects to the late Telangana ideologue included Telangana Rashtra Samithi president K Chandrasekhar Rao, Telangana Political Joint Action committee convener Kodandaram, students, lawyers, academic staff, non-teaching staff and others.

TRS Floor Leader Etela Rajender, MLA Harish Rao and many other prominent leaders were seen taking part in the funeral procession. The Telangana activists raised ‘Jai Telangana’ slogans right through the entire length of Prof Jayashankar’s last journey.

On the way, the Telangana activists paid tributes to the departed Telangana ideologue at the Martyrs’ Memorial.

In an unsavoury note, some activists went berserk and indulged in vandalism, damaging the statue of former chief minister and TDP founder N T Rama Rao at Public Gardens in Hanmakonda.

The activists also ransacked the furniture at the District Congress Committee office.

Earlier, the activists attacked the Minister for Handlooms and Textiles P Shankar Rao, who had come to pay his tributes to Prof Jayashankar.(INN)

    T activists damage YSR's statues

    2011/9/23 7:30:57 Tension prevailed in Buddaraopeta of Warangal district on Friday when some Telangana activists desecrated the statue of late chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy.

    According to police, some Telangana activists damaged YSR's statue in Buddaraopeta of Khanapur mandal and raised slogans calling him as an enemy of Telangana. It may be mentioned that the TDP MLAs became the target of T-activists across Warangal district on Friday. However, it was for the first time that the activists damaged YSR's statue that was installed after his death about two years ago.

    A similar incident was reported from Nalgonda on Friday. At Devarkonda crossroads, some Telangana activists set ablaze a bronze statue of Rajasekhara Reddy. Some activists poured petrol and set the statue on fire.

    Police have registered cases and are investigating. (INN)

    The TRS has demanded the government to install a statue of the late professor Jayashankar.

    The TRS has asked the government to set up a grand and befitting memorial for the professor in Hyderabad. The TRS also wants the Ekasila Park in Warangal to be named after Jayashankar.

    2011/6/21 10:35:21 Pro-Telangana activists on Tuesday demonstrated that even a solemn occasion like a funeral is not out of bounds for raising the separate statehood demand by obstructing Minister for Information Technology Ponnala Lakshmaiah as he was on his way to the residence of Telangana ideologue K Jayashankar to pay his respects to the departed soul.

    Professor Jayashankar died of throat cancer earlier in the day.

    The Telangana activists, raising ‘Jai Telangana’ slogans, attempted to attack the Information Technology Minister.

    However, the police intervened and pacified the activists.

    Under tight police cover, the Minister placed a wreath on Prof Jayashankar’s body and left the place.

    Earlier, students of Kakatiya University Joint Action committee hurled chappals and stones on the convoy of MP Rajaiah when he came to pay his respects to departed Telangana ideologue Prof Jayashankar.

    However, the police intervened and pacified the students. Later the MP paid his floral tributes to Prof Jayashankar.(INN)

    TRS demands memorial park, statues for Jayashankar

    2011/6/28 8:51:50 The Telangana Rashtra Samithi on Tuesday demanded that the state government construct a ‘memorial park’, apart from a bronze statue on the Tank Bund as a mark of respect to Telangana ideologue Professor Kothapalli Jayashankar who passed away last week.

    Briefing media persons on the TRS’s Executive Committee meeting, party general secretary Madhusudhana Chary told media persons that the resolution demanding the memorial park in the city and bronze statue for Prof Jayashankar were adopted unanimously.

    The Executive Committee also decided to push the state government to rename the Ekashila Park in Hanmakonda, where Prof Jayashankar’s body was kept for public darshan, after the Telangana ideologue. Besides this, the TRS also demanded that the state government install a bronze statue of Prof Jayashankar in the same park.

    The meeting decided to appeal the state government to introduce a chapter on the life of Prof Jayashankar in the high school textbooks. Besides this, the TRS will also install bronze statue at Telangana Bhavan.

    The party’s state executive committee meeting was chaired by party president K Chandrasekhar Rao.(INN)

    Violence in Prof. Jaya Shankar’s last journey

    2011/6/22 4:19:52 TRS and pro Telangana activists have turned violent during the last journey of Prof. Jaya Shankar who was cremated today at Warangal. During the procession, they have attacked the DCC Chief Gandra Venkatramana’s house and later the DCC Office in Warangal. They thronged stones at his house broken the window glasses. Later, they have attacked on DCC Office and set fire to office furniture. However, the police who expected trouble from the pro Telangana activists have controlled the mobs. Then, the mobs have tried to damage the statue of NTR at Hanmakonda, but again the police have dispersed them.

    The final rituals of Prof. Jaya Shankar were performed by his adopted son Brahmam at Padmakshamma Gutta. Since, the students and pro Telangana activists who become very emotional with his death and in violent mood, many of the other party leaders couldn’t dare to attend the last rituals of Prof. Jaya Shankar.

    BJP activists stop installation of NTR statue at VSKP

The local TDP workers arranged a program on the occasion of NT Rama Rao’s birth anniversary and invited union minister and NT Rama Rao’s eldest daughter Purandrareshwari to unveil the statue.

    Pro T activists pelt stones at Minister’s convoy in Warangal

    2011/6/22 3:41:19 Suspected pro-Telangana activists continued their opposition to Congress leaders visiting Warangal to pay their last respects to Telangana ideologue K Jayashankar, by attacking the convoy of Textiles Minister P Shankar Rao on Wednesday.

    Dr Shankar’s convoy was stopped and attacked when he arrived in Hanmakonda to pay his respects to the late Jayashankar by irate pro-Telangana activists who demanded that he resign from the Cabinet to support the separate statehood movement.

    The activists raised ‘Jai Telangana’ slogans and pelted stones and chappals at Dr Shankar Rao’s convoy, breaking the glass of the Ministers’ car.

    However, the Minister escaped any physical harm when the police intervened and escorted him to safety.

    Earlier on Tuesday, suspected pro-Telangana activists had attacked and heckled MPs Rajaiah and G Vivek when they had gone to Hanmakonda to pay their last respects to Professor Jayashankar.

    The protestors are accusing the leaders of the ruling Congress and the main opposition Telugu Desam Party of resorting to delaying tactics in the creation of Telangana.(INN)

    2012/1/18 14:35:19 Tension prevailed in Khammam municipality when the police arrested TDP MP Nama Nageswara Rao after he unveiled the statue of Telugu Desam Party founder N T Rama Rao on the banks of a canal to mark his 16th death anniversary.

    The district administration and police raised serious objection for installing the statue without the permission of the local municipality. However, the TDP activists had a heated argument with the police and district officials and unveiled the statue. The activists asked as to how the district administration permitted the installation of statue of former chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy at other important places.

    With the situation going out of control, the police lathicharged the TDP activists and took the MP into custody. He was then shifted to Three Town police station. In protest against the arrest, the TDP activists later staged dharna in front of the police station. (INN)

    The mentor of the Telangana movement Professor Jayashankar is dead. Jayashankar passed away at 11.30 this morning. He was battling with cancer for some time. He was 77.

    Jayashankar breathed his last at his residence in Hanamkonda where he was shifted from the hospital upon his request.

    PSR blames Samaikhya activists, demands KU be renamed after Jayashankar

    2011/6/22 3:44:08 Refusing to believe that pro-Telangana activists could possibly attack his convoy, Textiles Minister P Shankar Rao said that his convoy was pelting with stones by Samaikhya Andhra activists in Warangal on Wednesday.

    He also demanded that the Kakatiya University be renamed after Telangana ideologue Professor Kothapalli Jayashankar.

    Addressing media persons at the Congress Legislature Party Office, Dr Shankar Rao said that he believed that the attackers who pelted stones on his convoy in Hanmakonda in Warangal earlier in the day when he went to pay his last respects to Prof Jayashankar were not Telangana activists, but integrationists who wanted to sow seeds of hatred among the Telangana people.

    “I will not believe that the attackers were pro-Telangana activists. They are most certainly pro-Integrated Andhra Pradesh activists and resorted to attacking my convoy to create differences between all those who are fighting for a separate state,” Dr Shankar Rao said.

    He added that the pro-Telangana activists realise what Congress leaders have done and are doing for the cause of the separate state and hence would never attack any leader from his party

    “Whoever they might have been, the attackers committed a grave mistake, violating a solemn occasion. They did not even show their respects to one of the leaders of Telangana by observing restrain,” Dr Shankar Rao stated.

    He added that his earlier predictions about Telangana had all come true, and said that a decision on a separate state would be made before the end of June.

    “I am trying to get an appointment with Congress president Sonia Gandhi. I hope to go to New Delhi as soon as the appointment is fixed. I will raise the Telangana issue before her,” the Minister promised.(INN)

    TDP postpones agitations in Telangana: Jayashankar’s death

    2011/6/22 8:53:53 The Telugu Desam Party has postponed its agitations to highlight the problems faced by the farmers in the Telangana region, from the earlier announced June 23 and June 24 to June 25, due to the demise of Telangana ideologue Professor Kothapalli Jayashankar.

    Talking to media persons at the NTR Trust Bhavan, Telugu Desam Party Telangana Forum convener Errabelli Dayakar Rao on Wednesday said that the party has decided to postponed the agitations as a mark of respect to Prof Jayashankar and in deference to the three day mourning period announced by the Telangana Political Joint Action Committee.

    Mr Dayakar Rao however made it clear that the agitations would go ahead as scheduled on June 23 and June 24 in the Seemandhra regions.

    Condemning the reports of pro-Telangana activists resorting to attack MPs who had come to pay tributes to the departed soul, Mr Dayakar Rao said that such incidents would send a wrong message to the people. He advised the protestors to observe restraint.

    Tallest Statue in the state

    The tallest statue in the state so far is the 54 feet statue of Gautam Budhha on the Rock of Gibralator. The distinction will now go to the statue of Annamayya.

    The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam is installing the statue at the Thallapaka crossroads in Kadapa. The statue will be about 108 feet in height. The work will commence shortly and it will take about a year for the statue to come up.

    KCR dashes Jayashankar and Harish Rao's hopes

    CM expresses grief at Jayashankar’s death

    2011/6/21 3:26:09 Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Tuesday expressed grief over the death of Professor Kothapalli Jayashankar.

    The Chief Minister said Prof Jayashankar was an intellectual and prominent academician.

    Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy recalled the yeoman services of Prof Jayashankar as the Vice Chancellor of Kakatiya University and Registrar of Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages.

    “He also served in the Board of Governors, Regional Engineering College, Warangal, and in several Working Groups of UGC etc,” Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy pointed out in a statement.

    The Chief Minister said Prof. Jayashankar worked as the President and General Secretary, Government College Teachers Association.

    “He was known as the ideologue of the Telangana movement and published a large number of papers in the areas of Economic Development and Educational Economics,” Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy added.

    The Chief Minister conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members.(INN)

    London, Dec 10 (IANS) Bollywood legend Dev Anand was cremated here Saturday, his aide said.

    His close friends and family members were present at the Putney Vale electric crematorium, the actor's associate Mohan Churiwala told IANS.

    Dev Anand died of cardiac arrest Dec 3 in London. He was 88.

    Maharashtra to remove encroachers from mill land

    Indu Mills’ 12.5 acres premises is located adjacent to Chaityabhoomi where Dalit icon B.R. Ambedkar’s mortal remains were cremated and the place is now revered by his followers around the country.

    The activists are demanding that the Centre immediately allot land at Indu Mills to the state government free of cost for the construction of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Memorial.

    TRS playing games on Jayashankar’s body to wipe out TDP: Kadiam

    2011/6/23 9:42:26 The Telugu Desam Party on Thursday alleged that the Telangana Rashtra Samithi was playing games on the body of Professor Kothapalli Jayashankar as part of a larger conspiracy to wipe out the TDP from the Telangana region.

    Telugu Desam Party leader from Telangana Kadiam Srihari told media persons at the NTR Trust Bhavan that the TRS has stooped to its lowest levels yet by trying to derive political mileage from the body of Telangana ideologue Prof Jayashankar.

    Mr Srihari was speaking after releasing a poster, `Jai Telangana, Jai TDP, Jai Chandrababu Naidu.’

    He said that, “The TRS is playing games on the body of Prof Jayashankar in order to get political mileage. The TTDP Forum members were unable to even have a glimpse of Prof Jayashankar’s body as the TRS wants to get mileage on his death.”

    Mr Srihari further expressed serious objections of the TRS trying to project Prof Jayashankar as belonging to one particular group in Telangana. “Prof Jayashankar belonged to all sections of Telangana people and we have to fulfil his aspirations,” he said.

    He alleged the Congress and TRS have cheated the Telangana people in the name of separate statehood and were targeting the TDP unnecessarily.

    Mr Srihari said that the poster released by him would create awareness among the people of the region about the development which took place in Telangana during TDP rule and party’s stand on contentious issue.
