Most Muslims are with Jagan

A former MLA from the city Jaleel Khan on Thursday said that most of the Muslims in Andhra Pradesh are supporters of Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy.

"Former Chief Minister Y S R Reddy brought two major schemes for Muslim students -- four per cent reservation in seats in all educational institutions, fee reimbursement for poor students among others. The Muslim community as a whole came close to Dr Rajasekhara Reddy and now to his son Jagan Mohan Reddy," Khan said.

At places where the Muslim population is more, the state government has erected Shadi Khanas for celebrating mass marriage function, he said.

The benefited Muslim community has much confidence on Jagan Mohan Reddy that he would also look after their welfare if he comes to power, Khan added.

    Suicidal statement by Jagan!

2011/4/27 18:58:07 YS.Jagan Mohan Reddy during his meeting with Muslim minorities in Proddhutoor in Kadapa district has stated that, incase if he make alliance with BJP in future, he will demand for 10% reservation for the Muslims all over the country.

This statement virtually puts him in fix as the Congress party is already campaigning against him that he is going to tie up with BJP soon after the elections are over. Jagan might have casually or intentionally told this to Muslim community, but the timing of his statement is going to leave its impact on his vote bank. It also hands over a powerful weapon to Congress party to go heavily on him at this very crucial point. In other words it’s a nothing less to suicidal statement.

Jagan won’t ally with anyone: Gali

2010/12/12 5:53:56 A day after his alleged business associate, minister for tourism in the BJP-led government in Karnataka, Gali Janardhan Reddy. indicating a possible alliance of former Kadapa MP Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s new political party with the BJP in Andhra Pradesh, sources in Y.S. Jagan’s camp maintained that the new party would not have a tie-up with any party or group of parties.

Jagan camp sources said that statements made by Janardhan Reddy in this connection, while addressing a BJP workers meet in Hospet, have disturbed YS Jagan's camp. Some of the pro-Jagan websites in Telugu and English flashed the news, disagreeing with the statement of Gali Janardhan Reddy, and stated that Y.S. Jagan's party getting linked up with NDA is ruled out.

After quitting Congress party, citing humiliation to his family and the legacy of his father, late Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Dr Y.S. Rajashekhar Reddy, on December 7, Jagan announced in his home tome Pulivendula, that his new party will wipe out Congress from Andhra

Pradesh over next three years, declaring that AP assembly elections scheduled to be held in 2014 will be the final test for his new party. Obviously, there are reasons for Jagan camp to condemn `NDA-alliance' talks by Janardhan Reddy, at this juncture.

Any indication of either joining with BJP, or joining the BJP-led NDA before the elections, is sure to hit secular credentials of Jagan's new party, which is banking heavily on Christians, Muslims, farmers, youth and the labour class.

Some of the senior national leaders of BJP have reportedly contacted Y.S. Jagan and offered support to him, and as a goodwill gesture, sources said, BJP is not likely to field candidates in Kadappa Lok Sabha, and Pulivendula assembly seats, vacated by Jagan and his mother Jayamma respectively.

TDP demands separate quota for Muslims

2011/12/24 17:25:21 Welcoming the decision of the UPA Government to give 4.5 per cent quota to Muslim community in jobs and educational institutions, the Telugu Desam Party on Saturday demanded that the Muslims be given separate and should not be included in the OBC quota.

Addressing the media at the NTR Trust Bhavan, party politburo members Yanamala Ramakrishnudu and Dadi Veerabhadra Rao said that the government should hike the OBC quota to 52 percent besides giving separate quota to the Muslim community. They ridiculed the UPA decision to give quota to Muslims from the OBC category as a sign of ‘bankruptcy’ of the Congress-led government.

They alleged that the government has ignored the reports of Sachar Committee and Ranganath Mishra Committee which recommended 10 percent separate quota for the Muslims. They said it was unfortunate that the OBC quota had been slashed from 27 percent to 22.5 percent as result of the Muslim induction at a time when the BC associations and political parties have been demanding a hike from 27 percent to 52 percent on the basis of population in 2011.

The TDP leaders said that the Congress party, both at state level and national level, has always denied justice to the BC’s socially, economically and also politically.

They said that TDP founder N T Rama Rao, as a convener of the National Front and the then Prime Minister V P Singh, provided a special budget for the development of BCs, but the same was cancelled when the Congress party returned to power. They said that the Centre and State had remained silent and blind to the demand of the BC’s for a sub plan budget allocation on the same lines of SC/ST sub plan allocations.

The TDP leaders alleged that the UPA Government was showing step-motherly attitude towards backward class communities and demanded that the Centre should also hike BC quota from 27 to 52 apart from providing a separate quota to Muslims.

The TDP leaders said a separate constitutional amendment may be taken up, if necessary, to provide Muslims a separate quota and to increase the BC quota. (INN)

Jagan takes battle against CM to Hyderabad

    2011/2/16 7:49:51

YS Jagan and chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy are not seeing eye to eye. In fact Jagan has so far not even acknowledged Kiran as the CM.

Jagan who has been doing ‘deeksha’ over one issue or the other has chosen Hyderabad as his venue for his ‘Fees Pooru’.

Jagan will commence his deeksha on February 18 to coincide with the budget session of the assembly. This way Jagan wants to embarrass Kiran as much as possible.

Jagan is getting support form several quarters including the TRS as well as students from Hyderabad.

Ramzan is about fasting, piety, not Haleem

2011/7/31 3:54:09 For most non-Muslims, the mention of ‘Ramzan’ conjures up an image of the delicious Haleem and the ‘Sheer Korma’, but for the Muslims, these are the furthest things in their minds.

The Muslims’ only focus is to abstain from all foods and liquids throughout the day and offer as many additional prayers as possible.

Interestingly, the ubiquitous Haleem stalls are thronged by Muslims who are away from their homes for jobs or any other purposes, besides a large number of non-Muslims who take the opportunity to relish the dish which is quite nutritious.

According to Idara Tahkheekhat-e-Ilmia Director Maulana Syed Khwaja Moizuddin Ashrafi, Muslims are expressly directed to abstain from worldly pleasures and concentrate solely on the spiritual aspect during the Holy Month. “It is wrongly assumed by a majority of non-Muslims that the Holy Month is used to relish delicacies like Haleem,” Maulana Ashrafi says.

He points out, “Any Muslim will tell you that he will keep the fast to get closer to God and get spiritual upliftment. Some of the Muslims who are not quite able to get spiritual upliftment are habituated to the good things of the world concentrate on the delicacies. But this does not mean that Haleem or other delicacies are an integral part of Ramzan. Ramzan is observed by every Muslim around the world, while Haleem is only available in Hyderabad.”

Maulana Ashrafi adds that with the Holy Month around the corner, Muslims all over the world are busy making last minute arrangements so that they can concentrate on getting as much spiritual benefit as possible in the next one month.

This one month will see the people observing fasts from dawn to dusk, over 14 hours, besides offering the Taraveeh prayers in addition to the compulsory prayers offered five times a day throughout the year.

Some of the more pious ones even offer the Tahajjud prayers in the dead of the night before the time for Sehri, the predawn meal, begins.

Besides this, affluent Muslims are required to give 2.5 per cent of their wealth in charity to the poor in the form of Zakaat. This is considered the most remarkable aspects of Islam, where the well-to-do are required to take care of the people who are indeed needy.

Maulana Ashrafi points out that the first preference for Zakaat should be given to one’s poor relatives, then those poor who are known to him and then the orphans who are indeed in need of help.

“Care should be taken as to the person who is given the Zakaat is indeed deserving. Nowadays, many Madrasas are targeting affluent Muslims and trying to gain advantage of the Zakaat laws,” the Maulana says.

The devout Muslims, both adults and children, irrespective of gender, observe fast for the full day shunning away all sorts of food and drinks. Though the fast is not mandatory for children they also join their elders in the family and observe fast.

The fast starts at Saher, the time before dawn and ends with the dusk, soon after the sunset.

This year the Saher time ends at 4:27 AM and the Iftar time (breaking of the fast) begins at 6:55 PM on the first day of Ramzan.

The Holy Month begins with sighting the crescent moon and ends at sighting the next crescent moon. The date in Islamic calendar begins from the dusk unlike the days in Gregorian calendar beginning at midnight.(INN)

Impose ban on Togadia's speeches:Muslim body

2012/4/15 9:36:42 The Aalmi Jamiyatul Mashaiq, a representative body of religious heads, on Sunday demanded that the Hyderabad City Police impose a ban on the speeches of VHP leader Praveen Togadia.

In a statement, AJM chief advisor Moulana Syed Shah Mazhar Hussaini alleged that despite the prevailing volatile situation due to recent communal clashes in the Old City, Praveen Togadia was being allowed to make provocative speeches in different parts of the city. Referring to one such speech, he said that Togadia objected to the reservation being given to Muslims and tried to instigate SCs and STs by falsely claiming Muslims were being reservation benefits from their quota.

Mazhar Hussaini said that the Muslim community was being reservation not on the religious lines, but due to their poor economic conditions. However, he said the SCs and STs too were given reservation benefits purely on religious grounds. He said that a person belonging to other religions could not get reservation or other benefits that a SC or ST enjoys.

He also defended the Haj subsidy and other benefits that the minorities enjoy and said that Togadia was mistaken that those sops were being given to the Muslims from the taxes collected from the majority community. He said Muslims too were paying the taxes regularly and thousands of Muslim NRIs were contributing to the foreign exchange that the country earns.

Demanding that the City Police impose a ban on the Praveen Togadia's speeches, Mazhar Hussaini said that provocative speeches with distorted facts would only affect the communal harmony in the city. (INN)

Remove Muslims from BC-B list: BC leaders

2012/2/5 12:22:09 The Backward Classes organisations on Sunday demanded the removal of Laddaf caste of the Muslim community from the BC (B) list.

Addressing a meeting organised by the Chautadha Sri Vaishnavi Sangham at Jubilee Halls, several leaders of Backward Classes demanded that the Laddaf caste of Muslims which has been provided reservation under the BC-B list should be removed. They said that the Laddaf community could be included in the BC-E list which has been created to give four per cent reservation for Muslims in the State.

Pradesh Congress Committee president Botsa Satyanarayana who attended the event as Chief Guest, assured that he would take up the issue with the BC Commission.

The BC leaders also demanded setting of sub-plan funds for the welfare of backward classes on the line of SC and ST funds. BJP leader Dr K Laxman expressed concern that the BC community was not getting the benefits that they deserve. He asked the government to ensure proper implementation of the schemes meant for the BC welfare.

Botsa assured the gathering that he would take up the issues raised during the meeting with the State Government and BC Commission. (INN)

Premature to provide 10 pc quota to Backward Muslims: MoS

2011/8/8 9:24:41 Minister of State for Minority Affairs Vincent H Pala on Monday said that it would be premature for the Centre to provide 10 per cent reservations for Backward Muslims based on the recommendations of the Ranganath Mishra Commission report.

In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Mr Pala said that since recommendations contained in the report of the National Commission for Religious and Linguistic Minorities are under consideration of the Central Government, the question of states providing reservation of 10 per cent for Backward Muslims based on the recommendations of the NCRLM Report is premature at this stage.

The Report (NCRLM), commonly known as Ranganath Misra Commission, was laid in both the Houses of Parliament on December 18, 2009.

Mr Pala also informed the House that Action Taken Report (ATR) on NCRLM has not been laid in the Parliament.

“Placing of ATRs in the Parliament is mandatory in the case where the Commissions are set up under Commissions of Enquiry Act 1952. However, the NCRLM was set up under Government Resolution No1-11/2004-MC (D), dated October 29, 2004,” the MoS in his written reply.

He added that the recommendations or findings of the Commission have been circulated to concerned Ministries or Departments for their comments.

Mr Pala further informed the House that under the Prime Minister’s New 15 Point Programme for the Welfare of Minorities, priority sector lending is provided for various activities to the Minorities including Muslims. He added that in 2010-11, Rs 1,43,396.70 crore have been provided under this programme.(INN)

Jagan makes inroads into TD bastion

2010/12/8 6:53:53 Strangely, one can not find a YSR statue in Badvel unlike in many parts of the state. The only statue of a prominent political leader the town has is that of the late Telugu Desam leader and former minister B Veera Reddy. YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s followers are scouting for a suitable location to install a YSR statue. There are no YSR statues on the Badvel-Jammalamadugu road. Those existing are in the interior villages.

The reason for it is that the Badvel- Jammalamadugu section has been the stronghold of the TDP and other anti- YSR forces. Jagan followers are now searching for suitable places to install YSR statues on this route. They are also searching for a political space for themselves in the area.
“I transport around 200 passengers everyday from Jogireddypalle to Badvel.

And, most of them talk about Jagan,” said an autorickshaw driver, B Danam. V Krishna, a mason in Badvel, said that he had supported the Praja Rajyam last time and decided to support Jagan next time.
In Mydukur, represented by minister DL Ravindra Reddy, a degree student Irfan said that the youth would support Jagan. He also hinted at some Telugu Yuvata leaders and activists joining Jagan’s party. Several voters in Mydukur were unhappy with the `non-performance’ of Ravindra Reddy in the last six years. “No major work has been taken up in Mydukur in six years,” said another student, G Chinna.

Obulesu, who was participating in a rasta roko at the Mydukur centre demanding categorisation of Scheduled Castes, declared that this time he would vote for Jagan’s party. But, Jagan has not made his stand clear on classification of SCs. “Categorisation and Jagan’s party are two separate issues. Do not club them and do not confuse me,” Obulesu shot back.

Surprisingly, several people refer to Jagan with respect as ‘Jagan sir’. Kullayappa, a petty trader in Jammalamadugu, said YSR was like a god to him.
“Jagan’s new party will be god’s own party,” he remarked.
Asked about the nature and personality of Jagan, a large number of people in Kadapa district had no complaints against the young leader. “Do not think that Kadapa means bombs. Jagan is not a rowdy. He has always been kind to us and has never hurt anyone,” Ramasubba Reddy, a farmer, said.

“Jagan may be aggressive at times but is growing gentle. Did you not notice a perceptible change in YSR’s attitude after he became chief minister? Jagan will be fully mature after he launches his party,” said M Ramachandra Reddy. But how much and how far and wide will Jagan’s new party make an impact? As of now, he is enjoying the support of a majority of Christians, Muslims and Reddys. If the trend continues, Jagan is sure to dent the prospects of the ruling Congress in Rayalaseema.
It will also depend on how many voters he cam wean away from TDP’s influence.

There are some who wished that Telangana should be separated so that Jagan would emerge an undisputed leader of Rayalaseema. “Let us be rid of Telangana. Our headache will go.
Rayalaseema will then develop,” hoped an employee of Transco.

First Pak film to release in India

    2008/2/29 23:27:50

As Hindi films are finally screened across Pakistan, Khuda Kay Liye will be the first Pakistani film to be released in India.

Directed by Shoaib Mansoor, Khuda Kay Liye highlights the difficult situation in which the Pakistanis in particular and the Muslims in general were caught in during and post 9/11.

It presents the clash between fundamentalists and liberals within the community. The film, which won rave reviews in Pakistan and overseas stars, Pakistani actors Imaan Ali, Shaan as well as Naseerudin Shah.

The film is about the difficult situation which Pakistanis land in after 9/11. There is a war going on between the fundamentalists and the liberal Muslims. The situation is creating a drift not only between the Western world and the Muslims but also within the Muslim community.

The educated and modern Muslims are in a difficult situation because of their approach towards life and their Western attire. They are criticised and harassed by the fundamentalists, and on the other hand the Western world sees them as potential suspects of terrorism just because of their Muslim names.

This paradox is resulting in great suffering for a forward looking Muslim. The interesting thing about the film is how it connects the happenings in the three continents.

Unlike the usual Indian and Pakistani films based on romantic sagas, dances and songs, this film is based on some very serious issues, raising a lot of controversial questions engaging the Muslim minds these days.

The film has been honoured with the Roberto Rossellini Award in Italy and also got best film award at 31st Cairo International Film Festival. Khuda Kay Liye will release on March 28.

Bollywood turns to Mumbai blasts to look at Muslims

2006/11/3 19:25:49 A new Bollywood film will use the July rail bombings in Mumbai that killed 186 people to examine the genesis of Islamist militancy in India and the patriotism of the country's Muslim population.

The Hindi-language film industry, the world's largest by volume and ticket sales, often makes simplistic movies about communal harmony, but seldom any serious examination of the problems of minority Muslims in India.

Its patriotic films are often a blood-and-gore rhetoric against arch-enemy Pakistan, which is blamed for fanning militant violence and trying to break up India.

"Live TV", to be directed by award-winning filmmaker Ujjal Chatterjee, promises not to play to cheap public sentiments, and instead, rely on documented history.

One of those facts -- which forms a sub-plot of the film -- is the story of young Kashmiri Muslims who fought invaders from Pakistan, months after the British colonial rulers partitioned India in 1947.

"Muslims in the (Kashmir) valley are very patriotic people and the movie will remind us all about a glorious past Kashmiris can look back on with pride," Chatterjee told Reuters.

The film opens with four young television journalists reaching one of the seven bomb sites in the western metropolis of Mumbai where they find people trapped inside trains.

The reporters, while following up on the story, find that dozens of Muslims are held on suspicion of involvement in the blasts. They try to find out if the suspects were being harassed because of their religion, Chatterjee said.

Hundreds of Muslims were rounded up and questioned by police after the July 11 bombings in Mumbai because investigators believed that Indian Muslims had carried out the attacks at the behest of Pakistan-based Islamist group Lashkar-e-Taiba, which is fighting New Delhi's rule in disputed Kashmir.

Indian Muslims are estimated to number about 140 million in a total population of 1.1 billion.

Bollywood stars Viveik Oberoi and Ashmit Patel are expected to play the male leads while Esha Deol or newcomer Sameera Reddy will be their love interest.

"Live TV", to open early next year, will be shot extensively in exotic locales in Kashmir and in crowded Mumbai suburbs, said Chatterjee. His earlier film, Escape from Taliban, about the true story of an Indian woman's flight from Afghanistan won critical acclaim.

"There will be lots of three-dimensional effects and computer graphics in the film, making everything seem real," he added.

YS Jagan is all set to float his new party soon. The name, flag and colors will be worked out and revealed in a couple of months affording to sources close to the leader.

While this is fine it is understood that former congress leader Chengondi Harirama Jogaiah who later sided with Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam is now trying to get close to Jagan.

Chegondi is known as a foul mouth and also as iron leg so Jagan would do well to keep this man as far away as possible. Otherwise Jagan will also have to face embarrassment like Chiranjeevi did.
