Shammi Kapoor, who romanced Bollywood beauties in the snow-capped mountains of Kashmir in films like "Kashmir Ki Kali" and "Junglee" and immortalised the shikara on the Dal Lake in the song "Tareef karun kya uski", has finally become a part of that surrounding forever -- his ashes were immersed in the lake.
The ashes of the actor, who died Aug 14, were immersed by his son Aditya Raj Kapoor Friday.
Aditya Raj was accompanied by his sister Kanchan and actors Shabana Azmi, Vinod Khanna, Asha Parekh, Sharmila Tagore, Poonam Dhillon, Amitabh Bachchan and Tina Ambani.
"Yes, we have immersed the ashes in the Dal Lake," Aditya Raj told IANS.
Aditya Raj, along with all the actors, left Mumbai for Srinagar for the immersion Friday morning.
A household name among the old and middle-aged locals of Kashmir, the late actor's family and friends could not have thought of a better farewell to the Bollywood veteran.
"He loved the Dal Lake and his soul will definitely be solaced as his ashes were immersed in the lake of his dreams," said shikara owner Zahoor Ahmad, 56, on the lake.
Ever since armed violence started here in the early 1990s, it is for the first time that such a galaxy of Bollywood stars has come to the valley.
The Oberoi Hotel overlooking the lake has now been taken over by the Lalit Palace Hotel which is celebrating its centenary this year.
Shammi would always stay in a particular suite of the hotel and scores of his fans would line up to have a glimpse of their matinee idol each morning during his stay in the valley.
"We hope to keep Shammiji's relationship with Kashmir alive. His friends and family would persuade Bollywood to return to the valley with the same love and attachment as the 'Junglee' did all his life," local travel operator Abdul Hamid said. (IANS)
2006/12/10 5:45:21 The beautiful actress had to swim across a lake for a scene in Mani Ratnam’s movie Guru .
Ratnam believes in realistic depiction of characters in his movies. And instead of shooting at foreign locations, the talented filmmaker shoots his films in India, where their stories are set.
He shot ‘Guru’ in South India. And he made the movie’s heroine Aishwarya Rai ride a bicycle, walk through fields and even swim in a lake for her scenes in the movie. This is Ratnam’s way of bringing authenticity to the character.
Ash’s character Sujatha, a village girl, is introduced in a song, which was originally meant to show her riding a bicycle. Ash did ride the cycle but she hurt herself during the shoot.
As a result, Mani Ratnam made modifications in the song. Music director A R Rahman composed a new number called ‘Nanna Re’, a rain song. Instead of cycling, the song shows Ash walking through a village and swimming in a lake.
The actress actually stepped into a natural lake to shoot for the scene. She even swam a good distance across it.
In the film, Ash plays a woman who is married against her wishes to a man she does not love. As she goes to Bombay to live with her husband ( Abhishek Bachchan ), her animosity slowly turns into love.
The film tells the story of a man who comes from a village with a dream to make it big in the city. It is slated to release in January next year.
Bollywood actor Priyanka Chopra visited the Dal lake here on Sunday much to the delight of her fans who patiently waited for hours to catch a glimpse of her, even as many of them returned disappointed earlier in the day.
Priyanka, who was in the city as brand ambassador of Swiss luxury watchmakers Tag Heuer, visited the world-famous lake for a sight-seeing trip in the evening.
The actor herself rowed the boat for a while much to the delight of her fans who have assembled along the banks of the lake.
However, a large number of young fans of Priyanka were disappointed as they failed to see her despite skipping meals and climbing hills and trees.
As news of Priyanka's arrival trickled in earlier in the day, her fans were seen scurrying around even in the high-security zones of the city.
"I have been here since the morning to see Priyanka," said an ardent fan Mohammad Amin.
He footslogged it around the Dal Lake, visiting all the Mughal Gardens at Nishat, Shalimar and Harwan and the Botanical Gardens, but all in vain.
"I have not seen her yet," a disenchanted Amin said. Other fans skipped meals and roamed around in the hope of meeting the Bollywood beauty,
Some youths shouted: "We heard she is staying in Grand Palace Hotel, but the guards are not allowing us inside." The sporty ones had another grouse, unable to meet cricketing legend Kapil Dev.
Kapil was among 86 golfers, mostly from outside the state, who were seen in action for nearly three hours at the one-day Tag Heuer-Kingfisher Precision Golf Tournament, held for the third year running.
The tourney was inaugurated by Tourism Minister Mohammed Dilawar Mir at the Royal Springs Golf Course.
2011/9/3 8:59:20 The historic Hussain Sagar lake has just got a face lift. The State Government has installed seven fountains, which will not only improve the water quality, but will add to the beauty of the lake.
Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Saturday inaugurated seven High Jet fountains, installed at a cost of Rs 1.32 Crore. Each fountain goes up to the height of 20 metres and discharges about 160 Cum water per hour. According to officials the fountains would enhance the dissolved oxygen and improve the water quality.
The Chief Minister on Saturday visited the Hussain Sagar Lake and Catchment Area Improvement Projects along with Ministers, MP, MLAs and other officials and asked the officials to speed up the projects on a war footing to beautify the Hussain Sagar area.
Hussain Sagar Lake has become polluted by the entry of untreated sewage and industrial effluent through the nalas that flow into the lake. As a result, nutrient rich sediments accumulated in the lake bed which in turn acted as an internal source of supply of nutrients to the Lake water. Other sources of pollution included cattle washing, vehicle washing, dumping of domestic solid waste along the shore line as well as the immersion of large numbers of Ganesh and Durga Idols during festivals containing paints, clay, gypsum and plaster of Paris, flowers and garlands. Due to the resulting eutrophication, algal blooms with emission of bad odour, the water body is not conducive for recreation and pisciculture.
HMDA has taken up a project "Hussain Sagar Lake and Catchment Area Improvement Project (HCIP)", to maintain round the year water balance in the lake, to improve the lake water quality by preventing pollutants entering into the lake both at the points of source & non-point sources of pollution, removal of nutrient-rich sediments at lake bed, interception and diversion of dry weather flows, improvement of nalas and to improve the overall lake environment and its surroundings for enriched biodiversity, increasing the potentiality of eco-tourism.
Officials explained to the Chief Minister on the construction of a new 30 MLD Sewerage Treatment Plant at Picket Nala, upgradation of existing 20 MLD Hussain Sagar Sewerage Treatment Plant, Construction of Ring Sewers around the Hussain Sagar Lake, Construction of Small Sewerage Treatment Plant - 5 MLD at Ranghadhamini Cheruvu, Construction of Trunk Sewers in Secunderabad Cantonment Board area and in GHMC Zone-VI, Capacity Enhancement of Interception and Diversion (I&D) Works and Recycled Water Supply Facilities. The Lake and Nala Improvement works involve dredging and disposal of sediments, Installation of Aeration Equipment, Shoreline Improvement, Nala Improvement, its restoration, fencing and Greenery Development. Slum Development, Public Awareness & Community Participation and Capacity Building are also being taken up.
The Chief Minister also visited the 20 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant upgraded from Secondary Level Treatment to Tertiary Level Treatment using Membrane Technology and designed for removal of Phosphorous and Nitrogen and the treated water is designed to have the quality of SW-II Parameter i.e. bathing quality and for non potable use. The total contract value is Rs.28.30 crs, the likely date of commissioning of the plant is October 15, 2011. The Chief Minister also inspected the Kukatpally Nala which is the largest point pollution source to the Hussain Sagar Lake and almost discharges about 250 MLD of sewage per day.
As usual, the Chief Minister kept the officials and media waiting for aver one-and-a-half-hour for the event. Though his visit was originally scheduled at 10 am, he reached the venue at 11.40 am. He concluded the tour after an hour at about 11.50 am.
The Chief Minister was accompanied by Municipal Administration Minister Maheedhar Reddy, city ministers Mukesh Goud and D Nagender, Secunderabad MP Anjankumar Yadav, NDMA vice-Chairman M Sashidhar Reddy, Mayor Smt B Karthika Reddy, Prl Secretary MA&UD Sam Bob, HMDA Commissioner Rajesh Tiwari, GHMC Commissioner M.T.Krishna Babu, Hyderabad Collector Natrajan Gulzar and local corporator Mohammad Shareef. Event managers can learn lot of lessons from the Hyderabad City Police which has exhibited its skills by ensuring successful conduct of Ganesh immersion procession on Sunday.
Ensuring security for nearly 12 lakh people on city roads spread across 15 kilometres is not a small task. However, effective planning and execution has ensured that the celebration of festival without any hassles.
Imagine the logistics involved in the Ganesh procession. Nearly 25,000 Ganesh idols were immersed in the Hussain Sagar Lake on Sunday. Depending upon the size of each idol, a truck or other vehicle was required. Small streams from all directions joined the main procession at different places. The City Police deployed its men across the city in such a way that they effectively monitored the movement of each vehicle till they reached Hussain Sagar Lake for immersion. Further, despite the fact that thousands of idols were to be immersed, the policemen displaced no sense of urgency and without disturbing the festive mood they ensure that the vehicles move at a smart pace.
Similarly, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and other departments worked in tandem by making effective arrangements at the Hussain Sagar Lake for the immersion of the idols. Over 50 heavy duty cranes were deployed and on an average each idol was immersed within 5 minutes. Elaborate security arrangements were made at the lake to avoid the incidents like drowning.
Further, the movement of vehicles carrying Ganesh idols was designed in such a way that the empty vehicles left the Hussain Sagar in short time without causing any obstruction to the main procession. Entire event was monitored using hundreds of surveillance cameras and it was also recorded using 800 video cameras. The City Police officials stayed in touch with each other using 2500 wireless handsets. Strategically, instead of using four-wheelers the policemen relied on two-wheelers and auto-rickshaws to reach different locations.
The coordination between various departments and the proper execution of plans has ensured that the peaceful conduct of 24-hour-long Ganesh immersion procession in the city on Sunday. However, the City Police has been actively engaged in security arrangements for the last 10 days. According to an official, managing a force of over 25,000 men was not an easy task. "Besides arranging vehicles for the security personnel, many times we face difficulties in arranging proper food for them," said an official.
Overall, the successful conduct of Ganesh procession amidst unprecedented security is a perfect lesson for the event managers and they should not miss documenting all its aspects. (INN)
Wear life jackets or get lost: Officer to Rachcha unit
2012/2/5 5:17:14 Mega power star Ram Charan Tej's forthcoming movie 'Rachcha' has faced bitter experience in Kerala. Its director Sampath Nandi plans for a duet song on hero Ram Charan Tej and Tamannah at famous Periyar Lake in Kerala. When, the unit is all set to start its shooting activity, the Officer-in-charge of the KTD has suggested the hero heroines should wear life jackets while sailing in the boat as a safety measure. But, as it looks funny to shoot a romantic song with hero heroines wearing life jackets, Sampath Nandi asked the Officer to allow shooting without wearing life jackets, for which officer bluntly denied. So, the unit has to pack-up form Periyar and said to be searching for another lake where life jackets are not must.
'Rachcha' has two songs left balance for shooting. If, the unit would have completed one song at Periyar, Sampath Nandi plans the other in abroad. 2011/9/11 7:56:05 Amidst unprecedented security and presence of over a million devotees the final Ganesh immersion procession passed off peacefully in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad on Sunday.
Thousands of big and small idols were taken into a 15-kilometre long main procession from Keshavagiri in the Old City to Hussain Sagar Lake for immersion in large trucks. However, the procession was delayed by almost four hours primarily due to the delay of small processions. Police have stopped the processions near Mecca Masjid to facilitate the peaceful conduct of prayers at noon and also in the evening.
Making the best use of Sunday, people in large numbers lined up along the procession route and also gathered at Tank Bunk and Necklace Road to witness the immersion of over 40,000 big and small Ganesh idols. Nearly 25,000 security personnel including Special Forces were deployed to ensure peaceful culmination of the mammoth procession. Police pickets were deployed at all sensitive places and heavy contingent was posted at all places of religious importance on the procession route. The city's tallest Ganesh idol at Khairatabad too has started its journey for immersion into the Hussain Sagar. Due to its heavy size, it is likely to reach the Hussain Sagar Lake only on Monday morning.
The festive mood was so intense that it dissolved all the fears that might have occurred due to recent blast at Delhi High Court. Hundreds of youth wearing saffron scarves marched towards the lake with the Ganesh idols for immersion by chanting slogans 'Ganapathi Bappa Mourya, Ab Ke Baras Jaldi Aa'. Hyderabad City Police deserves a pat for maintaining strict security without disturbing the festive mood.

Due to delay in the start of main procession in the Old City, the immersion too got delayed. Hundreds of trucks carrying the idols of Lord Ganesh were lined up en route Hussain Sagar Lake waiting for their turn for immersion. Officials say that the immersion process would be completed only by Monday afternoon. The State Government has deployed over 50 heavy duty cranes to facilitate the immersion of idols.
