CBI to seek extension of Gali's custody

The Central Bureau of Investigation is planning to seek the extension of custody of former Karnataka Minister Gali Janardhan Reddy for further probe into the Obulapuram Mining Corporation case.

Sources say that the CBI may file a petition in the Special CBI Court on Monday seeking extension of custody for one more week. The court on September 13 had granted CBI custody for Gali and OMB Managing Director BV Srinivas Reddy till September 19th.

Meanwhile, the CBI officials are reportedly planning to bring Janardhan Reddy to Bellary on Monday to open bank lockers belonging to him and his family members which might yield more evidence on the OMC’s alleged illegal activities.

The CBI is encouraged with the treasures that they found in Srinivas Reddy’s bank lockers in Bellary. The CBI officials were shocked to learn that at the Axis bank in Bellary the OMC and Gali’s men had occupied almost 200 of the 350 lockers in that branch. Ten lockers belonged to Gali family including his wife and children.

In the six lockers which the CBI has opened on Saturday it found nearly 15 kgs of gold, some platinum jewelery and Rs 3 crore in cash. “Most of the gold is imported gold biscuits and ornaments from Dubai,” they said.
Sources say that though OMC Managing Director B V Srinivas Reddy was cooperating with probing agency, Janardhan Reddy was proving to be a tough nut. He is learnt to have recognized his own signatures on some documents shown to him.

Besides seeking extension of custody, the CBI is also planning to conduct polygraph and narco analysis tests on Janardhana Reddy, Srinivas Reddy and three persons. (INN)

Gali in CBI’s custody till Sept 19

2011/9/13 4:36:11 The Central Bureau of Investigation Special Court on Tuesday sent the former Karnataka minister and mining baron Gali Janardhan Reddy to CBI custody for seven days. The court has also permitted the CBI to take Obulapuram Mining Corporation Managing Director B V Srinivas Reddy under its custody for further questioning till September 19.

The Special Court had earlier heard the bail petitions of both the accused and also the CBI’s plea asking for custody of Gali and Srinivas Reddy for further questioning into the illegal iron ore mining case. After hearing arguments from both the sides, Special Court Judge B Naga Maruthi Sharma rejected the bail pleas and granted seven day CBI custody for both the accused.

Following Special Court’s orders, the CBI team reached Chanchalguda Central Prison and took Janardhan Reddy and Srinivas Reddy into its custody. Both were later taken to the CBI’s office at Kendriya Sadan at Koti.

Earlier, Additional Solicitor general Vivek K Tankha appeared on behalf of CBI and strongly argued for CBI custody stating the agency wants to crack the illegal mining syndicate operated in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh in collusion with government officials. He said the CBI has clear evidence to prove illegal mining right from time the OMC secured the lease.

However, Gali Janardhan Reddy’s counsel Uday Lalit wondered how the authorities failed to intercept a single truck when 29 lakh tonnes of ore was allegedly mined in other areas.
Earlier, seeking 15 days custody of both the accused, the CBI’s counsel argued that their custodial interrogation was crucial as they had personal knowledge of illegal mining of iron ore in mining area across Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Besides, they could also provide information on their nexus with the government officials.

Talking to media persons outside the court, CBI joint director VV Laxminarayana said that the probing agency would try to extract crucial information related to the case. He appealed to the electronic media not to depute their video-cameras outside the CBI’s office as it would hamper the investigation. “We will keep you updated about all the developments in the case,” he said.

Laxminarayana said that the CBI would conduct brain mapping and polygraph test of the accused, if required, and the court grants permission.

Sources say that the CBI might question Gali about his financial transactions, bank accounts in foreign banks and the involvement of officials in his mining operations. The CBI has reportedly prepared separate questionnaires for Gali and Srinivas Reddy.

The CBI had originally registered the case against Gali’s Obulapuram Mining Company on December 7, 2009 at the request of Andhra Pradesh government in the wake of allegations of illegal mining and irregularities in allotment of mining leases to OMC in Obulapuram and Malpanagudi villages of Anantapur district of the state.
