A special court Monday extended the judicial custody of former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhana Reddy and his brother-in-law B.V. Srinivasa Reddy till Oct 31 in an illegal mining case.
The special court for Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) cases extended the custody, which was ending Monday.
As the Telangana lawyers at Nampally Criminal Court continued their protest for separate Telangana state, the judge conducted the hearing via video linkage between the court and Chanchalguda Central Jail here, where the accused are lodged, CBI officials said.
The court Sep 30 had dismissed bail petitions of the mining baron and his brother-in-law. The same day, the court refused to remand the accused into further custody of CBI.
The federal agency had arrested the duo from Bellary in Karnataka Sep 5 in connection with the illegal mining in Andhra Pradesh's Anantapur district.
They were brought to Hyderabad the same day and the court sent them to judicial custody till Sep 19. The judge Sep 13 rejected bail pleas of the accused and remanded them to CBI custody for six days. (IANS)
2011/9/5 5:38:26 Nampalli Court, rejecting the bail plea of Gali Brothers has ordered 14 days remand to Gali Janardhan Reddy and to his brother Gali Srinivasa Reddy. Hence, the Police are shifting them to Chanchalguda Jail. CBI has filed a separate petition in the court seeking the custody of Gali brothers for further interrogation. It will come before court on Wednesday. Before presenting them in the court, CBI has also sealed their last option of averting the jail-stay on medical grounds by conducting thorough medical tests by a team of doctors, who certifies both Gali Brothers are healthy and has no serious health problems.
2012/2/12 20:01:56 Gali Janardhan Reddy and his Srinivasa Reddy who are resting in Chenchalguda jail since last few months and couldn't get bail despite filing several petitions in the courts, now seeking God's help in overcoming their problems. So, Gali brothers have constructed Shiridi Sai Baba and Lord Shiva temples in Chenchalguda jail with their own expenses. Both the temples were opened two days back. On this occasion Gali brothers have distributed prasadam to prisoners and to jail staff.
2011/9/8 0:17:55 Mining king Gali Janardhan Reddy’s bail petition which comes before Nampally court today has been adjourned to Friday. CBI’s petition for the custody of Gali brothers was also adjourned to the same day. Hence, Gali brothers who lead a luxurious life until they got arrested by CBI were forced to stay along with the other prisoners in Chanchalguda jail, until Friday. Even, then also it is doubtful whether the court will grant them stay or not, as CBI has completely seized all the escape routes for Gali Brothers. Unless, some thing miracle takes place, jail stay for Gali brothers seems inevitable.
2011/9/18 23:22:06 CBI has presented both Gali Brothers before Nampally court on Monday morning since their 6day custody period was over. Court rejecting the bail plea of Gali Brothers remands them up to October 3rd. Therefore Gali brothers were shifted to Chanchalguda jail a short while ago. CBI has appealed the court to extend the custody of Gali Brothers for 9 more days, but the court adjourned the case.
Gali turns emotional: Gali Janardhan Reddy, when saw his advocate Lalith Uday at Nampally court all of a sudden he become very emotional and touched his feet as if requesting him to bail him out. However, Lalith also fails to convince the court to grant bail for Gali Brothers.
2011/9/26 1:41:35 The High Court has adjourned the case of bail petition filed by Gali Janardhan Reddy and his brother Gali Srinivasa Reddy to 14th of October. So, it seems Gali brothers are going celebrate this festival session in Chanchalguda jail along with the other prisoners.
2012/1/12 7:19:44 Illegal Mining king Gali Janardhan Reddy after celebrating his Birthday in Chanchalguda Jail recently, is preparing to celebrate Pongal festival next in the same premises. Nampally Court has extended his judicial custody up to 25th of this month rejecting his bail plea.
Gali's advocate has pleaded before the court to sanction bail to his client assuring that he will not flee away from the country, but the court has rejected his plea and extends Gali's custody. The court has handed over the copies of charge sheet filed against him and his brother Srinivasa Reddy by CBI and adjourned the case to 25th of January.
At the same time the court also adjourned the case filed by IAS Officer Srilakshmi to 24th, who requests the court to sanction special category cell in the jail. Srilakshmi has filed her petition through video conference.

2011/9/4 23:52:05 CBI, which was conducting raids on the powerful mining king of Karnataka- Gali Janardhan Reddy and his brother Gali Srinivasa Reddy’s houses since last few days, has arrested the both today morning and shifting them to Hyderabad for further interrogation.
About ten teams consisting 20-40 sleuths in each team are still conducting their raids on Gali Brothers houses and offices located in different places of the state. CBI Joint Director Lakshmi Narayana and his team have recovered several important documents and CDs, Rs.3 crore cash, and 30Kgs of Gold from Gali Janardhan Reddy’s house. They have seized Rs. 1.5 crores cash from Gali Srinivasa Reddy’s house. CBI also has seized two helicopters of Gali Brothers.
CBI has filed several cases on Gali brothers under different sections including 420. However, Obulapuram illegal mining case would be the lead case for all other cases filed against them. Gali Srinivasa Reddy is Managing Director of the Obulapuram Mining Company, has obtained a small piece of land at Obulapuram for mining purpose on lease from the Government and then his company extended its illegal mining activities to surrounding areas without taking any permissions.
CBI has served notices to near about 100 associate companies of Gali Brothers including their Obulapuram, Mahabaleshwar mining companies. This may lead to arrest of former Karnataka Chief Minister Yedurappa. Expecting these developments, he has applied for an anticipatory bail few days back, but the court has rejected his petition. Many officials in Mining and Forest departments who were involved in these illegal mining affairs may also fear arrests by CBI soon.
Right now, CBI is taking Gali Brothers directly to its office in Hyderabad to complete paper work and then present them in the court.
The arrest leads to high tense in Ballari area. Some BJP leaders and corporaters start picketing in the city against their arrest.
2012/2/1 7:05:26 The illegal mining kings Gali Janardhan Reddy and his brother Gali Srinivasa Reddy who are now behind bars have created a new record with their bail petitions. Both of they are desperately trying to get bail, but in vain. The courts are turning down their bail pleas. For the 4th time, the court has rejected their bail pleas again.
How Kanimoli & Co celebrates Diwali in Tihar Jail?
2011/10/27 20:01:05 DMK MP Kanimozhi, former minister A. Raja and other VIPs in the Tihar Jail here celebrated Diwali on a low key, greeting fellow prisoners and accepting sweets from jail officials.
"Raja and (Congress leader Suresh) Kalmadi greeted the other inmates in their own wards and relished the delicacies given by jail authorities," a prison official who requested anonymity told IANS.
Special food was also served on Diwali day Wednesday.
Prisoners got a vegetable curry with paneer and tandoori roti for lunch as well as ladoo, burfi and jalebi in the evening, the official said.
The inmates were also allowed to buy candles and diyas and snacks from the jail canteen. These were lit up in the periphery of their wards.
But not many were keen on this. "Only Raja bought some candles and lighted them," the official said.
According to him, the high-profile inmates -- which includes corporate executives charged with the 2G scam -- were upset because they could not meet their relatives or lawyers on Diwali since the day was a gazetted holiday.
"A special prayer was conducted but the VIP prisoners were not allowed to participate due to security concern," the official said.
In the evening, Raja was seen in the library reading books. Kanimozhi, who is also a poet, remained in her cell reading. Most of the others were glued to TV.
Tihar Jail, one of the largest in India, houses almost 11,000 prisoners. (IANS)
2011/9/5 3:54:41 Senior leader of Telugu Desam party Dadi Veerabhadra Rao on Monday demanded that the YSR Congress party president Jaganmohan Reddy be arrested for colluding with Karnataka Minister Gali Janardhan Reddy, who was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation in the multi-crore mining scam.
Talking to media persons, Veerabhadra Rao alleged that Jaganmohan Reddy had business links with Gali Brothers in the mining at Obulapuram in Anantapur district. He alleged that Jaganmohan Reddy was receiving 50 percent of mining money as investments in his firms in the name of a fictitious company established by Gali Brothers.
Demanding stringent punishment for those indulged in illegal mining of country’s valuable resources, Veerabhadra Rao opined that the guilty be awarded capital punishment. He said Gali Janardhan Reddy’s arrest would send a stern warning to those involved in illegal mining across the country. (INN)
2011/11/30 3:20:39 (IANS) Voting is underway in the bypoll to Bellary Rural assembly seat where mining barons Reddy brothers are taking on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) while being its members.
The booths opened at 7 a.m. Wednesday and will remain open till 5 p.m. Over 170,000 people are eligible to vote in the bypoll whose outcome will decide whether the three Reddy brothers, all BJP lawmakers in the state, remain in it or part ways.
They have put up their associate and former minister B. Sriramulu as an independent candidate after making him resign both from the BJP and the assembly, to which he was elected in May 2008 from this constituency.
The BJP has fielded Bellary businessman P. Gadhilingappa, who is contesting for the assembly for the first time.
Over 2,500 police personnel have been deployed to ensure incident-free voting in the 195 booths, of which over 100 are considered sensitive and 15 very sensitive, meaning prone to possible violence or attempts at fraudulent voting or attempts to disrupt balloting or scare voters from coming to the booths.
Of the three brothers, the most vocal Gali Janardhana Reddy, former tourism minister, is in Hyderabad's Chanchalaguda jail since Sep 5 in connection with illegal mining case in Andhra Pradesh.
The younger Gali Somashekara has been suspended from BJP along with two Lok Sahba members and three other state lawmakers for supporting Sriramulu.
The elder, Gali Karunakara, has not been seen in public since mid-Septmeber. He and Somashekara are assembly members while Janardhana is in the legislative council.
Congress nominee is B. Ramprasad who had lost to Sriramulu in the 2008 polls. The Janata Dal-Secular is not contesting. Votes will be counted Dec 4.
Bellary is about 300 km from Bangalore and the rural seat is reserved for the Scheduled Tribes.
The brothers were a pampered lot in the BJP not long ago because of the financial clout they wielded from the billions of rupees they made from iron ore mining, most of it allegedly from illegal mining and export.
For the BJP, it is a prestige issue as it wants to show that it is the party and not the individual that matters.
A defeat has the potential to bring down the D.V. Sadananda Gowda ministry as the Reddy brothers claim the support of around 14 of the BJP's 119 lawmakers in the 225-member assembly that includes one nominated member.
The battle is essentially between Sriramulu and Gadilingappa.
Sriramulu has announced that he will float a new party after results are out Dec 4. He says he is waiting for Janardhana Reddy to come out of jail to finalise details of the new outfit.
2011/9/28 5:28:16 Telugu Desam party president N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday reiterated his allegation that former chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy was behind the murder of Telugu Desam Party Anantapur MLA Paritala Ravindra.
Talking to media persons as part of three days visit to Anantapur district, Chandrababu Naidu alleged that YS Rajasekhara Reddy hatched conspiracy to kill a few more TDP leaders apart from Paritala Ravindra in Anantapur district.
Naidu also accused YSR of being involved in the Obulapuram Mining Corporation irregularities by granting illegal permits to former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhan Reddy for mining in the district. He alleged that YSR responsible for encouraging corruption of Gali Brothers.
The TDP chief said that Gali Janardhan Reddy was behind the bars for destroying the Tribal Goddess Sunkulamma Temple at the mining site in the district. “The Goddess might have cursed Gali janardhan reddy for destroying her temple as part of mining activities,” he said.
Naidu also claimed the credit for Gali's arrest goes to his party as it was the TDP which launched continuous agitation against illegal mining permits in the state. He alleged Gali Brothers looted thousands of crores of mining property and cause huge loss to the state exchequer.
Stating no one could destroy his party, Naidu reminded that Gali Janardhan Reddy once made a similar statement and now he is counting bars in the jail. He appealed to people to chase away corrupt persons from the politics.
Stating the Central Bureau of Investigation probe would come out with comprehensive report on illegal assets of Gali and YSR congress party president Jaganmohan Reddy, Naidu said that the government should call global tenders for mining in Obulapuram.
Earlier, Naidu unveiled TDP founder NTR statue in Anantapur. He also conducted aerial survey of Obulapuram mines on the occasion. (INN)
2011/9/11 8:33:08 The Central Bureau of Investigation on Sunday conducted searches at the residences of two close aides of former Karnataka Minister Gali Janardhana Reddy, who has been arrested in connection with a case of illegal mining.
According to sources, an 11-member CBI team led by Superintendent of Police Venkatesh from Hyderabad searched the residence of Gurulinge Gowda, Chairman of the Bellary Urban Development Authority located at Renukacharya Nagara.
Another team raided the house of Rajashekara Gowda, a Gram Panchayat member and confidant of Reddy. The CBI teams have reportedly seized several documents that could establish the illegal mining activity in the Bellary and other areas by the Gali brothers.
The CBI also conducted raids on the premises of close relatives of Gali Janardhan Reddy at Basaveshwar Nagar and Parvathinagar in Bellary. The CBI is likely to continue its raids at other locations throughout next week.

2012/2/29 22:36:28 The Bangalore CBI sleuths have taken permission from Hyderabad CBI sleuths to take Gali Janardhan Reddy to Bangalore for interrogation in connection with his illegal affairs in the name of Associated Mining Company. He will be shifted to Bangalore by road after his lunch break at Chanchalguda jail. The Bangalore CBI has filed cases against 20 including Gali Janardhan Reddy and his wife Aruna Lakshmi for their involvement in illegal mining cases.
2011/9/5 3:19:03 Hailing the arrest of Obula Mining Corporation (OMC) head and Karnataka Minister Gali Janardhan Reddy and OMC managing director B Srinivas Reddy, Health Minister Dr DL Ravindra Reddy said that the arrests were a lesson for those who were resorting to illegal amassing of wealth.
The minister alleged that the Gali brothers looted the iron ore under ‘benami’ names in the Obulapuram and Rayadurg areas with the blessings of political godfathers. He clarified that the arrests were not politically motivated as being alleged by YSR Congress Party chief YS Jaganmohan Reddy. He took exception to Jagan Mohan Reddy taking the side of Gali brothers despite knowing well their activities caused huge losses to the state's exchequer.
Dr Dr Ravindra Reddy also alleged that Jagan Mohan Reddy derived undue favours from the position of his father and former chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy who allowed illegal land allotments to his son and his business associates on a quid pro quo basis which resulted in heavy loss to the state. Congress MLAs seek return of ex-colleagues from Jagan's camp
2011/9/5 4:57:33 Congress MLAs from Kadapa district Veera Shiva Reddy and Vardharajula Reddy on Monday wondered over the statement of Kadapa MP Jagan Mohan Reddy disassociating himself with the Karnataka Minister Gali Janardhan Reddy after the latter's arrest in the mining scam.
Talking to reporters at Congress Legislature Party office, Shiva Reddy said Jagan Mohan Reddy benefitted a lot with the Gali Brothers and was hand in glove with them in the illegal mining activity. However, minutes after Gali was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Jagan distanced himself with the Gali brothers. He reminded that at the time of inauguration of Brahmani Steels, it was the same Gali Janardhan Reddy who gifted a hi-tech bus worth Rs 5 crore to the then Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy.
Vardharajula Reddy said Jagan's latest stance on Gali must be a lesson for all the MLAs who are supporting him. If the MLAs face any problem in future, then Jagan would not even identify them. He said the MLAs must reconsider their decision and return to Congress fold. "Jagan will distance himself and not even identity KVP Ramachandra Rao, YSR's ex-advisor, if he is named in some scam. This speaks a lot about an individual's character," he said.
The Congress MLAs ridiculed the claim of YSR Congress party spokesperson Ambati Rambabu that more than 70 MLAs would join Jagan's camp and resign to their post. They said even the 26 MLAs were regretting their decision and might quit the Jagan's camp instead of resigning from their assembly membership. They challenged that both of them would quit the Congress if even three MLAs from the existing 26 MLAs express that they willingly submitting resignation letter to the Speaker. (INN)
It was a rainy and dreary Friday in New York city but that did not stop cinema buffs from coming out in full force to watch the much-awaited Saawariya and Om Shanti Om.
"I saw the first day first show. You bet. I would not miss it for the world," said one moviegoer. "I woke up at 10 am to get here for the 11 am show," said another.
It was a double celebration for Indians in Manhattan with the films releasing on Diwali.
"We bunked college for this movie. We told our professor that it is Diwali and it is our festival and we want to celebrate it," said a Bollywood fan.
"It is Diwali and we are feeling quite lonely as we are away from our home, and we want to connect in some way to the Indian community. What better way to celebrate Diwali than by watching a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film," said another.
And it's a Diwali bonanza at the box office for theatres running the two films.
"We are very pleased to be carrying Saawariya right now which is the first Indian movie to be co-produced and distributed by a major American studio. It is a decision that we are very proud of. It is doing very well for us especially at this time of the year," said Josh Young, House manager, Imaginasian Theatre.
The Indians in New York love it or hate it but nobody is indifferent to the movies.
"I think Shah Rukh Khan's six pack abs really work," commented a New York Indian on Om Shanti Om
"I saw his (Ranbir) father's movie Bobby on the first day and I am watching his son's movie also on the first day first show," said a fan about Saawariya.
"The music is great. I have a song on my phone," said another.
Usually left waiting and wanting for Bollywood films, Indians in New York are not concerned with the reported rivalry between Om Shanti Om and Saawariya. For them the two releases have been Bollywood's Diwali bonus for them and they are not looking a gift horse in the mouth.
