2011/10/22 0:43:09 Saudi Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz, who was minister of defence and aviation and one of the top leaders of the oil-rich kingdom next only to the king, is dead, Saudi and US media reported Saturday.
The Saudi news agency SPA quoted the royal palace as saying that the Crown Prince Sultan died of "illness". BBC said that he was in his eighties and was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2004.
US broadcaster CNN first reported the death, citing an unidentified US State Department source.
Crown Prince Sultan was one of the top figures in the oil-rich kingdom.
The royal court in a statement Saturday said: "King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud mourns the death of his brother and his Crown Prince ... Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud."
The statement also said he died "outside the kingdom following an illness".
He had various health issues in recent years. He had been in the US since June and underwent an operation in July, said Xinhua. (IANS)

2010/10/20 16:48:20 A British court sentenced a Saudi prince to at least 20 years in prison Wednesday for beating and strangling one of his servants at a swank British hotel.
Justice David Bean sentenced Prince Saud Abdul Aziz Bin Nasser Al Saud to life in prison with a 20 year minimum for the brutal assault at the Landmark Hotel in London on February 15. The sensational case had featured days of lurid testimony, complete with video images of the shaven-headed prince attacking his aide in a hotel elevator.
"No one in this country is above the law," Bean said. "It would be wrong for me to sentence you either more severely or more leniently because of your membership of the Saudi royal family." The jury had deliberated just 95 minutes before returning its verdict.The prince was convicted of both murder and a second count of grievous bodily harm with intent relating to the attack in the elevator.
Prosecutor Jonathan Laid law says the prince had abused his aide in the past and that photographs stored on a mobile phone "plainly proved" that there was a "sexual element" to the abuse. Al Saud originally told police that he and his aide Bandar Abdullah Abdul Aziz had been drinking into the early hours of the morning, and that when he awoke at 3pm he could not rouse Abdul Aziz. The 46-year-old prince is in Indian to help strengthen business and economic links with Britain, and was invited for a tour of Yash Raj Studios when he visited the city of Mumbai.
Filmmaker Yash Chopra escorted the royal around the movie studio and explained he was impressed with Andrew's knowledge of Bollywood.
He told Indian's IBN news: "I was very surprised he discussed Indian films with me. He also spoke to me about the business aspects of filmmaking in India."
Following the tour, the royal was treated to a lunch with a host of Bollywood stars, including actors Abhishek Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Bobby Deol, Rani Mukherji, Preity Zinta and Lara Dutta.
Actress Kiron Kher confessed she found the prince a real "heart-throb" and described him as very "charming."
Kiron Kher gushed: "It was a real pleasure meeting him, he was so charming. We have been reading about him all these years. He was the real heart-throb of the British royalty. To meet him in person was great fun."

Unlike, his previous movies he has asked the director Sreenu Vytla to avoid unnecessary attention of media for this film shooting, fearing hype which again may raise expectations on this film too. So, the unit is also quietly completing their shooting. It is learnt that, the unit will move to Gujarat in the first week of next month to shoot some song sequences there.
