Sunil Reddy sent to Chanchalguda Jail

The CBI special court on Tuesday rejected the petition of CBI seeking extension of custody of Sunil Reddy, an accused in the Emaar case.

The court gave these directions when the CBI sleuths produced him in the court after the end of his two-and-half days' custody on Tuesday. He was later remanded to judicial custody till February 1 and sent to Chanchalguda Central Jail.

The CBI filed a petition seeking extension of his custody for one more week. However, the petition was rejected by the court. With this, the investigation agency has decided to move a petition in the High Court seeking his custody.

Earlier, the investigating agency had sought 15 days' custody to quiz Sunil Reddy on various Emaar deals. However, the court granted only two-and-half days' custody. The CBI argued that Sunil Reddy needs to be questioned about the whereabouts of money collected from T Ranga Rao, director of Stylish Homes Private Limited for the villas of Emaar-APIIC Township.

Meanwhile, the CBI officials conducted medical tests for tainted IAS officer B P Acharya, who was arrested on Monday in connection with Emaar case. The officials conducted medical tests at Dilkusha Guest House. The doctors reportedly stated that B P Acharya was weak and advised him to take glucose frequently. (INN)

Shooting in jail just got expensive

    2007/6/21 5:32:09

Many of the Telugu films have a major scene involving jail. Either the hero goes to jail or the villain is in jail. Even major fight scenes are picturised inside jails. But all this is going to become quite expensive.

The jail authorities used to charge a nominal 10,000 rupees per day for film shooting. The amount has now been hiked to Rs. one lakh per day. Even this is likely to be raised to Rs. 2 lakhs per day. All this is likely to make it beyond the reach of the small budget films. So the shooting at jails has come down considerably. Only one film has been shot at the Chanchalguda jail recently. And the film is Chirutha starring Ram Charan Tej.

    Court dismisses Rajagopal's bail petition

2011/11/29 14:30:59 The CBI Special Court on Tuesday dismissed the bail petition of former Director of Mines and Geology V D Rajagopal, an accused in the Obulapuram Mining Company illegal mining scam.

While refusing the bail application, the Special Court at Nampally, however, accepted his request for granting him 'special class prisoner status' in the Chanchalguda Jail.

The Central Bureau of Investigation while opposing his petition had earlier charged Rajagopal with abusing his official position and misinterpreting the Mining and Mineral Acts to help OMC. The agency also contended that Rajagopal's release on bail at this juncture would hamper the investigation and he could influence the witnesses and tamper with the evidences against him.

However, Rajagopal's counsel had argued that the CBI has not made out any clear case against his client. The counsel said that his client was not involved in any corruption and acted as per the law.

After hearing the arguments, the Special Court rejected Rajagopal’s bail petition and directed the authorities concerned to provide him 'special class prisoner status' in the Chanchalguda Jail considering his education, status and health condition.

Rajagopal is the third accused in the alleged illegal mining scam. The other accused former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhan Reddy and his brother-in-law and OMC's Managing Director BV Srinivasa Reddy, who were arrested in Bellary earlier, are presently lodged in the Chanchalguda Jail. (INN)

    Prisoner No:697: Gali Janardhan Reddy

    2011/9/5 22:08:34

Mining baron Gali Janardhana Reddy, one of India's richest politicians, spent his first night at the Chanchalguda Central Jail like an ordinary prisoner, sleeping on the floor with other undertrials, an official said Tuesday.

The high-profile former Karnataka minister, who is said to fly in his helicopter from Bellary to Bangalore only to have breakfast, had to make do with rice, dal and vegetarian curry for dinner.

Breakfast was khichdi for both Janardhana Reddy and his brother-in-law Srinivasa Reddy, who were arrested Monday for alleged illegal mining.

A jail official said each undertrial was entitled to 600 grams rice, 100 grams dal and 250 grams vegetable curry a day.

Accustomed to a luxurious life in his palatial bungalows, Janardhana Reddy is now sharing crammed accommodation and getting ordinary jail food.

Like other undertrials, Janardhana Reddy will have to stand in queue for food, wash his own plate, clothes and sweep the surroundings.

He was allotted number 697 while his brother-in-law Srinivasa Reddy is prisoner number 696.

The duo were arrested by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) early Monday in Bellary for illegal mining in Andhra Pradesh, brought to Hyderabad and remanded to judicial custody till Sep 19.

According to Chanchalguda Central Jail superintendent Keshav Naidu, the duo spent the night in the barracks of the reception block.

Since there are no court orders for special class prisoner status, jail authorities are treating them like other ordinary prisoners. "They are not getting any special treatment," said the jail superintendent.

The mining magnate and his kin will be shifted to another barrack Tuesday. Unless their lawyers seek and get special class prisoner status for them, they will have to share the barracks with other petty offenders.

Janardhana Reddy was the Karnataka tourism minister in the cabinet of B.S. Yeddyurappaa, who had to resign recently in the wake of the Lokayukta report. His elder brother G. Karunakara was revenue minister while younger brother G. Somashekara is an assembly member from Bellary.

Disgraced IT czar and former chairman of Satyam Computer Services Ramalinga Raju, who is also lodged in the Chanchalguda Central Jail, enjoys special class prisoner status. He is entitled to better diet and accommodation in a separate enclosure.

Ramalinga Raju and eight other accused in multimillion Satyam accounting fraud are among 700 prisoners in the jail located in the old city and built in 1876.
