2011/11/13 8:32:21 (IANS) Over 20,000 girls belonging to Chhattisgarh's tribal region have been sold by human traffickers in the last eight years in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai, Congress leader Ajit Jogi said Sunday.
These girls mainly belonged to Jashpur, Surguja and Raigarh districts and were taken away by human traffickers in the name of jobs and trainings, the former Chhattisgarh chief minister said in a statement.
Expressing serious concern over the rising rate of human trafficking in the state, the leader hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government and accused it of "overlooking the problem since it came to power" in December 2003.
He said the prevailing law-and-order situation was "one of the main reasons for rise in human trafficking cases in the state's tribal areas".
Chhattisgarh's vast northern region, including Surguja, Korba, Jashpur, Koria and Raigarh districts are infamous for human trafficking cases. There have been many incidents of men taking away impoverished girls to big cities on the pretext of providing them jobs and forcing them into prostitution.
In a recent case, police Nov 10 arrested a youth in Jashpur for allegedly taking away 20 locals, including 14 girls.

2011/6/18 9:02:25 The Lok Satta Party on Saturday demanded that the Union Government empower States to monitor conduct of clinical trials by drug companies.
Party secretary P Bhaskara Rao, in a statement, said that for want of effective monitoring, drug companies could get away by enlisting illiterate and ignorant people as guinea pigs for their experiments.
Clinical trials are no doubt important for advancing medicine he said and added that all precautions should be taken in conducting them since they sometimes led to the death or disability of people being subjected to them.
India has of late become the capital for clinical trials because of the genetic diversity of its people. In addition, India has a vast pool of illiterate, ignorant and poor people who volunteer themselves for the trials even for a pittance. There is no wonder that multinational drug companies view India as an ideal place for cutting down cost and time in their bid to perfect blockbuster drugs.
Mr Bhaskara Rao recalled that more than 1500 people have died in clinical trials in the last two years and added that the drug companies accepted their responsibility in only 25 cases. They paid compensation to the next of kin of some of the victims only after the Indian Council of Medical Research took them to task.
The LSP leader demanded a thorough inquiry into the adverse consequences of drug trials in Andhra Pradesh. No mercy should be shown to drug companies conducting trials in violations of laws, rules and regulations, he said.(INN)

Savio Rodrigues, a media professional, who moved the Court has pleaded that the release of the movie should be banned as it will have a ripple effect on the state's tourism.
The petitioner has also said that the movie portrays Goa as a destination of sex, drugs and easy availability of women.

The petitioner also stated that over a period of years, Goa has been receiving negative global publicity on account of issues relating to drugs, sex and murder in some cases of international tourists.
"Goa has been portrayed in media and in the said movie in particular so as to depict it as destination of drugs and sex, both of which are claimed to be easily and freely available in this state," it adds.
This wrong depiction is attracting and shall attract persons who are drug addicts, paedophiles, sex offenders, drug traffickers and persons engaged in trafficking of children and women, he claimed.
Former tourism minister Fransisco Pacheco also raised the issue during the ongoing state legislative assembly session.
Goa tourism minister Nilkant Halarnkar had told the House that the government will 'seriously' take up the issue with the producer.

Fardeen Khan charged with attempting to buy cocaine
2011/10/4 3:36:28
Mumbai, Oct 4 (IANS) A Mumbai court Tuesday found actor Fardeen Khan guilty of attempting to buy cocaine in a case dating to 2001 but dropped charges of posessing over two grams of the drug. The sentence will be pronounced Nov 2 and the actor could find himself behind bars for six months.
"Now, I have been charged only for attempting to buy cocaine. Charges pertaining to the possession of cocaine have been dropped," Khan told reporters outside the court.
"This is something we have been appealing to the court for the last 10 years. I am extremely happy about how things are going," he added.
The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) had arrested Khan in Juhu in northwest Mumbai May 5, 2001 on charges of possessing cocaine. Nasir Shaikh who allegedly sold him the drug and Tony Gomes who allegedly supplied it to Shaikh were also arrested.
Charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, Khan had, however, claimed that he had attempted to buy only one gram of cocaine as against NCB claim that nine grams of cocaine was found on him and Shaikh.
According to the NDPS Act, less than two gm is considered a small quantity. Under the act, an accused can, at the maximum, face a six-month jail term for possession of a small quantity of drugs.
2011/2/13 0:51:06 Dr. Jeevita Rajashekar’s brother Murali who caught red handed by the city police while buying the Cocaine drugs from a Nigerian drug peddler was sent to charlapalli jail along with four others after the court remands them14 days, for further interrogation of their case. However, before they were shifted to jail, producer Murali speaking to the media people said that, some people whom he believed as his friends have trapped in this case. He is innocent and has nothing to do with this drug business racket. He also told the media that, soon he is going to reveal the names of all other people in the film industry, who were involved in this drug business and consuming the drugs
Trisha, whose name was surfaced in the Nigerian drug peddler’s contacts list, was quite upset for a while for being suspected as drug user. She repeatedly told the media that, she never even saw those drugs in her life and its unfair to drag her name into the scandal. But, media ran behind her for quite a sometime narrating the spicy stories about her mid night parties and alcohol habit. But, with the passing time gradually the dust settles and Trisha is back with her all her spirits.
Speaking to media, Trisha said “I have been accused as drug addict by the media. But, no one has ever explained how can a drug addict get so many film chances? I have number of films in hand and busy doing many films. Is this not enough to prove that I was not guilty? Someone might have sketched this ugly plot to defame me. But, in the end they might have understood that it didn’t work at all, because the industry and the people who closely know about me never believed those rumours. They encourage and stand by me all the way. Thanks, at least someone who put this acid test for me made the people witness my innocence.
The human trafficking episode involving BJP MP Kataria has an Hyderabad angle. A personal assistant to TRS leader is alleged to be involved in the racket. TRS leader Chandrashekar Rao however denied any role into the whole episode.
He however said that if any party leader was involved he would take action. About 70 Gujaratis are supposed to have traveled abroad on fake documents from Hyderabad so far. Each of them have paid anywhere between 10 lakhs and 30 lakhs to the agents for this purpose.
2011/6/17 8:59:41 Axis, a Hyderabad based pharmaceutical company at Miyapur, Kukatpally, which conducted unauthorized drug trials on about 20 poor women working in quarries in Piduguralla of Guntur district, after hoodwinking the government for a long time was finally sealed after seizure by the authorities concerned on Friday.
The company, disregarding a formal permission from the Drug Control Authority of India, allegedly engaged poor and illiterate women as guinea pigs for conducting tests for treatment of breast cancer.
Employing brokers, the company allegedly hired innocent and BPL women and gave them injections after collecting blood samples for a meagre ‘amount’.
It was only later that they came to senses after they developed side effects and took ill.
“It was an aberration of the system,” said Minister for Health and Family Welfare DL Ravindra Reddy who was still unaware of the company which did all the mischief even after months.
Apparently the Minister avoided the media persons at the Secretariat on Friday but the waiting journalists even from upcountry papers persuaded him to reveal the facts related to the sickening incident which would not have come to light at all but for some victims’ severe complaints to a local doctor.
A report was awaited on the entire episode and action would be initiated against the culprit once identified, said the Minister. It was admitted that clinical trials were common in the developing countries.
Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy who held a review meeting here, along with the Minister for Health and other officers, expressed concern over the incident and called for a report on the whole incident.
Meanwhile two brokers, employed by the said company for the last two months to entice the women suffering from abject poverty, were said to have been arrested on Friday.
The ‘trial’ of drug saw the light only after victims developed side effects including extreme weakness and pain.
Later the victims were admitted to the Guntur government hospital.
Earlier, when they saw a local doctor for treatment they were shocked when informed that they were subjected to experimental tests.
The company is understood to have flouted the rules as the drug trials were conducted only on laboratory animals like rats, monkey etc.
The victims had no knowledge of what was administered to them like dangerous consequences in the name of clinical evaluations.(INN)
