A 23-year-old woman, Sabitha, committed suicide by setting herself ablaze allegedly due to harassment by her husband for more dowry.
Sabitha took the extreme step on Tuesday morning at her residence in Permanguda. She poured kerosene on her body and set herself on fire. She died on the spot. According to Ibrahimpatnam police, Sabitha was married to Krishna, a JCB operator, about five years ago. The couple also had one child. However, Sabitha was allegedly being harassed by her Krishna for more dowry and the same reason is believed to have led her to commit suicide.
Ibrahimpatnam police are investigation the case. (INN)
2011/11/25 16:38:24 A 20-year-old woman committed suicide allegedly due to the harassment by her husband for dowry.
According to Medpally police, the deceased - A Lavanya, was married to one Shekhar Reddy of Boduppal about 18 months ago. At the time of marriage, a dowry of Rs 3 lakh was promised by her parents. However, they could pay only Rs 2.20 lakh.
Shekhar was allegedly harassing Lavanya to pressurise her parent to pay the remaining Rs 80,000 of dowry amount. About three months, Lavanya was blessed with a baby girl. Lavanya's parents held a function at their residence and gifted one tola gold chain to the baby.
On Thursday night, Shekhar came to his house in an inebriated condition and asked Lavanya to tell her parents to deposit remaining dowry amount of Rs 80,000 in the baby's name in the next few days. Upset over her husband's behaviour and harassment for dowry, Lavanya committed suicide by hanging to the ceiling fan.
Medpaly police registered a case and further investigations are on. (INN)
2012/1/19 14:24:34 Around 20 women staged a dharna before the office of South Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police at Purani Haveli here on Thursday in protest against the alleged harassment by the local police in a dowry case.
The women alleged that the Santoshnagar police wrongly booked two neighbours in a dowry harassment case. Based on a complaint filed by Reshma, the Santoshnagar police registered a case of attempt to murder, dowry harassment and other relevant sections against her husband Ghouse Pasha and her in-laws, all residents of Shaheen Nagar about two months ago. However, the police arrested their neibhbours - Zarina and Razia in the case this week.
Zarina's relatives claimed that as the case pertains to dowry harassment, being neighbours they were not at all connected with the case. Accompanied with the local residents, the relatives first met Home Minister K Sabhitha Indira Reddy seeking help on Thursday morning and on her directions met DCP - South Zone Manish Kumar Sinha.
The DCP has assured the relatives that he would enquire into the matter. (INN)

Actor Prasanth has lodged a complaint with T.Nagar police station that his wife Grihlakshmi was already married with somebody, and has cheated him by hiding all the facts at the time of their marriage. He urged the police to investigate her past with the help of documents enclosed with his complaint.
Prasanth told the press: "I was shocked to learn through my fans that she had concealed her first marriage with one Venu Prasad. Now she has levelled dowry harassment charges against me. Actually they are threatening me to pay up Rs.50 crores as compensation for a permanent separation. Everbody knows that I have been in the industry for 17 years and have a clean image. There has not been a single complaint about my character in the industry!"
Prasanth and his wife Grihlakshmi got married two years back and even before their son was born, they started living separately. Grihlakshmi had complained that the actor and his family were harassing her for more dowry, and later filed a dowry harassment case against him. Some friends tried for them to reach a compromise, and both had even told the family court that they were willing to do so.
Meanwhile, Grihalakshmi's lawyer says that she will initiate legal action against the actor for trying to damage her reputation.
2012/2/11 1:43:34 A 21-year-old woman died of burns that she suffered after she was allegedly set ablaze by her husband and in-laws.
According to Vikarabad police, Shameem Begum was allegedly set ablaze by her husband Syed Ghouse and in-laws on January 29 when she failed to bring more dowry from her parents. She was admitted to a private hospital at Kothapet where she succumbed on Friday.
Shameem was married to Syed Ghouse, an electrician and resident of Shivareddypeta, about 16 months ago. The couple also had a 6-month-old daughter. However, Shameem was allegedly being harassed by her husband and in-laws and her failure to bring more dowry resulted in her death.
Police registered a case under section 302 IPC and started investigations. (INN)
2011/8/2 9:01:36 The Nampally Criminal Court on Tuesday granted conditional bail to Sirish Bharadwaj, the younger son-in-law of actor-turned-politician and Praja Rajyam Party president K Chiranjeevi, who surrendered himself before the court last Wednesday.
The Court, while granting the conditional bail to Sirish Bharadwaj, asked him to depose before the CCS police every Sunday between 9 am to 4 pm.
It also directed him not to go out of city without taking permission from the Court.
Sirish had been underground since the time his anticipatory bail petition had been rejected by the VIII Additional Metropolitan Sessions Court, Nampally Court on March 24, after his estranged wife Srija had lodged a complaint of dowry harassment against him and his mother.
He had surrendered on July 27.
The co-accused in the case, Sirish’s mother Suryamangala was granted anticipatory bail earlier.
Sirish and his mother Suryamangala, were accused of harassment (Crime Number 82/2011 of CCS Women PS) filed by Mr Chiranjeevi’s daughter Srija.
Sirija had alleged that Sirish Bharadwaj and his mother had been exploiting and ill-treating her for some time. She also claimed in her complaint that her in-laws had demanded Rs 50 lakh as dowry from her.
Earlier, the two had eloped and married in October 2007. Mr Chiranjeevi was against the match as he belongs to the Kapu caste while Bharadwaj is a Brahmin.(INN)
2011/11/19 15:10:05 The State Government will soon make required amendments to make Section 509 of the IPC a non-bailable offence in the State. As per section 509, word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman are punishable with a simple imprisonment for a maximum period of one year, or with fine, or with both.
During a review meeting with the higher officials at the State Secretariat here on Saturday, Home Minister P Sabitha Indira Reddy said that the Centre has agreed to make Section 509 a non-bailable offence. The government has also decided to set up a Special Court to try the cases of dowry and trafficking.
The Home Minister also warned the officials of severe action if they fail to act on the complaints of eve-teasing and other cases of harassment. (INN)

2011/7/27 2:47:36 Months after being underground, Sirish Bharadwaj, the younger son-in-law of actor-turned-politician and Praja Rajyam Party president K Chiranjeevi surrendered himself before the Nampally Criminal Courts on Wednesday.
After his surrender, Sirish was remanded to 14 days police custody. Following the Court directions, the police have shifted him to Chanchalguda Jail. Earlier, the City Crime Station police filed a petition in the court seeking his custody for five days.
Sirish had been underground since the time his anticipatory bail petition had been rejected by the VIII Additional Metropolitan Sessions Court, Nampally Court on March 24, after his estranged wife Srija had lodged a complaint of dowry harassment against him and his mother.The Court, after hearing the anticipatory bail petitions file by Sirish and his mother Suryamangala had rejected the former’s bail petition. 2011/2/22 6:55:49 Veteran actress Amani and her family members have been dragged to court under dowry harassment case by her brother’s wife Sashikala. It’s learnt that, Amani and her family members have harassed her and forced her to separate from her husband as she fails to meet their demands. Sashikala, who is living with her parents now, has filed a petition in Nelloer court against Amani, her husband and other members of their family.
Earlier, it was reported by a leading Telugu News Channel that, Amani, her brother and family members have locked Sashikala inside a room while she was having pains for delivery. It reported that, neighbors who heard her screaming have broke open the doors and rushed to her a near by hospital. Amani and her family members were severely criticized by one and all in the society for their cruel attitude shown towards their own family member who desperately needs their help at that moment.
Shashikala also accused in her petition that, her husband not only harassed her for dowry but also married another girl before divorcing her. Therefore, Amani and her family members were at receiving end in this case.
Amani, her husband Hazrath and her brother who attends the court on Tuesday, were quite irritated when media ran behind them asking questions and taking photographs. 2011/11/8 2:16:38 In order to check the crime against women, the State Police is planning to appoint at least one woman constable in all police stations in the State.
Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, Director General of Police V Dinesh Reddy said that to prevent attacks on women and sexual assault on children, particularly girls, the department would appoint one woman constable in every police station in the state. He said that the government was taking assault and harassment on women seriously and warned of stringent action against those involved in such acts.
The DGP said that one woman constable would be appointed at each police station to specifically deal with such cases. Apart from appointment of woman constables, he said that the government would set up two cells to register such complaints.
Dinesh Reddy said that the separate cells would also create awareness among women and provide legal assistance to them, whenever required. (INN)
Sirish Bharadwaj has gone underground ever since Srija field a case of dowry harassment against him and his mother Surya Mangala. Sirish’s father has filed a bail application in court.
Sirish has since moved a petition in the State Human Rights Commission. Sirish wants the SHRC to allow him to talk to Srija for at least five minutes.
However the acting chief of the SHRC rejected Sirish’s plea saying that a case is now pending in the Nampally court.
2011/7/20 5:01:15 Chiranjeevi’s daughter Srija who separated from her husband Sirish Bharadwaj and living with her parents has filed a dowry harassment case against her husband and in-laws. Ever since, she has nothing to do but to roam around lawyers, police and courts regarding her case. According to reports she is leaving for Dubai to pursue higher studies in Dubai University. It came to know that, Chiranjeevi has made necessary arrangements for her studies there. However, this news is not yet confirmed by them.
The Nampally court has postponed the hearing in the Srija and Sirish Bhardwaj case to April 16. The court was supposed to counsel both parties but as Srija and Sirish did not attend the court the case has been postponed.
The court had earlier granted bail to Sirish’s mother in the dowry harassment case. Sirish is still absconding.
2011/6/27 3:06:43 Shaik Irfan Pathan, the bridegroom who fled with the money given as dowry before his wedding, was arrested by the Guntur police on Monday.
According to police sources, Irfan was arrested based on the complaint of the bride’s mother that he had ran away with Rs 50,000, part of the dowry demanded by him, hours before the wedding was about to be solemnised on Sunday.
The incident had left both the bride and her mother shocked to such an extent that they had attempted suicide. However, the guests had managed to stop the suicide attempt.
It was on the advice of the guests that Muneerunnisa, the mother of the bride Ruqia, filed a complaint with the police.
Irfan is a motor mechanic and he had demanded Rs one lakh as dowry. However, he was given Rs 50,000.

2011/11/5 6:00:13 A tiger killed a woman in Katarniaghat forest reserve in this Uttar Pradesh district Saturday, an official said.
Nanki, 42, a native of Khairipurwa village, was killed in the Nishangarha forest range.
"The tiger attacked the woman while she was cutting grass along with other villagers in the forest area," Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) R.K. Singh told reporters in Bahraich, some 140 km from Lucknow.
"According to eyewitnesses, the tiger was full-grown. However, we are yet to ascertain it as the pug marks found near the victim's body are not very clear," he added.
According to wildlife officials, there are around 37 tigers in the Nishangarh forest range.
In October, a leopard from the Katarniaghat forest reserve killed a minor girl while she was sleeping outside her house in Sampatpurwa village. (IANS)
2011/5/30 7:38:55 Chiranjeevi’s son-in-law Sirish Bharadwaj who is facing dowry harassment case filed by his wife Srija had another set back today with his bail application. When, the High Court rejected his bail application, he knocks Supreme Court doors. But, there also he got rejection. Today, Supreme Court has refused to grant him bail. Hence, he has no other option except surrendering to police and face trial in the court.
Srija is currently staying with her parents and is planning to make her career in producing serials in small screen.
The sessions court on Thursday rejected the bail petition of Sirish, husband of Srija. The daughter of Chiranjeevi had filed a dowry harassment case against Sirish and his mother Surya Mangala.
The court however granted bail to Surya Managala with certain conditions. She has to report to the station house officer of the women’s cell every alternate day. She also cannot leave Hyderabad.
Sirish has been absconding ever since the case was field by Srija. The court said that the case against Sirish was of serous nature and hence cannot be granted bail.
